# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Wayfield: Why It Occurs and How to Stop It

Stop reading a minute when your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Normally, if your engine has not turned, it is emptied and fully cleaned where the vehicle is around Wayfield.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Many newer diesels in Hale, like those in Wayfield, carry on two fluids; your motor takes only the diesel.

AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, where a spray treats the fumes.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel goes in on each filling station visit, again and again.

The AdBlue side is filled far less often, normally from a bottle, and normally by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

It's in that gap that the slip lives.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place in Wayfield

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off The Ridgeway before work, or in the car park outside The Huntsman on the way home.

Next, the hand goes for the cap it knew on the old car — because a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

A spouted bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, once begun, keeps on.

It takes a few seconds, whether in Luton or right in the centre of Wayfield.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Look at these first, on a forecourt in Wayfield or a driveway out in Chatham. A few seconds, no more.

- Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally doesn't. Trust the cap, not its position.

- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on many vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- Look inside the fuel flap: many cars have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler is if it is not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park outside Chatham, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

When the light comes on, anywhere in Kent, follow this routine.

- Switch off after you park — flat ground, engine stopped, and not in a rush by Wallace Road on the verge.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" out loud while unscrewing it. It seems silly. It does the trick.

- The diesel cap stays on. Where the two share a flap, make sure it is shut before the bottle comes up.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap, and look again — making sure your diesel filler stayed closed throughout. After that, start your car.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Stage five is out.

## Wayfield: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the engine.

Don't switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Filling up with diesel will not dilute it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of that tank, just where the fuel is drawn from.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it's the BP or the another forecourt nearby, ask the staff to help roll the car away from the pump.

If you are on your own driveway in Wayfield, leave the vehicle where it stands.

Already started? Pull over when it's safe, then switch off.

The next exit is where to come off when you are on the M2, under 3 miles from Wayfield.

A short hop across Wayfield is a smaller job than a run towards Southend-on-Sea, under 15 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Wayfield: what occurs when we turn up

Our technicians come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside New Horizons Children's Academy, near Health & Fitness Club or on your own drive.

Both the work and the quote rest on three answers — which liquid, what quantity, and whether it has run — so our technicians ask.

That quote comes on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

Then your tank is emptied and the fuel system purged thoroughly.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own.

Once the filter is cleaned — or renewed, if needed — fresh diesel is added, and then the car gets tested.

Then our technicians fire it up and check it runs correctly before we leave.

Unrun cars mostly need a half-hour visit from the moment we arrive. The kit is fine on a live filling station, and hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

The insurer usually wants the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

While we travel, take a look at your insurance documents; many carry cover for misfuelling.

## AdBlue drains about Wayfield, and Kent beyond

Over ME postcodes, the teams that cover Wayfield — a small village — work the nearby spots too, Borstal and Walderslade included.

A postcode starting ME4 6 gets the van to you fastest.

Shifting your car is not needed.

A driveway, a lay-by on the way to Ridgeway Banks, a side street close to St Stephen's Church: we drain the vehicle where it sits.

If you're near a border, or somewhere hard to explain like the back of Fort Horsted, ring and ask rather than guessing.

## The short version for Wayfield motorists

Tip no AdBlue till you have read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank regardless, leave the car off then ring 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel drains it where it waits, anywhere around Kent.
