# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Weaponness: Why It Occurs

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and the ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103.

Normally, when your motor hasn't run, it is drained and thoroughly cleaned where your vehicle is in Weaponness.

If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Diesel feeds the motor — yet plenty of modern diesels seen about Weaponness and Falsgrave hold a second liquid too.

Your exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue ends up: dosed into the fumes to clean them, from a separate tank.

Separate tanks, different fillers.

Plenty of motors share a single flap for both, while some move the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel gets filled on each forecourt visit, again and again.

A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less often.

The slip lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank happen in Weaponness?

Carelessness rarely explains it. What does is three things lining up at once.

Hurry comes from the warning. The car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a driveway off Weaponness Drive, or heading home in the car park at South Cliff Recreation Club.

New-to-you motors come second, too. Hire cars, new vehicles and company cars put their fillers in new places, and the hand goes for the cap used on the old one.

Third, the spout goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in just as readily, and after the tip starts, nothing halts it.

Edgehill or the middle of Weaponness: it takes the same few seconds either way.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Whether a Weaponness forecourt or a driveway over in St Nicholas Cliff, take a few seconds over these before anything goes in.

- Position misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones are often blue or carry the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally do not.

- The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- A label inside your fuel flap often says which fuel goes where, on many vehicles. Look for it.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by the diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Scarborough.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

When the light goes on, wherever in North Yorkshire, use this routine.

- Stop on level, engine off, with time in hand — never hurried on the side of Back Straight.

- Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" out loud as unscrewing it. It sounds daft. It works.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where the two sit under a flap, make sure it is closed before lifting the bottle.

- Finish once your tank fills or the bottle is empty; until then, pour slowly using its built-in spout.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

Find during the second or third stage that AdBlue went into the wrong tank? That's where you stop.

Don't carry on to stage five.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Weaponness already?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the engine.

On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch the vehicle on.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is sucked from — so do not top up with diesel to dilute it.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it's the BP or the Penny Petrolium, ask the staff to help roll your car away from the petrol pump.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive around Weaponness.

When your engine has run already, pull over safely then turn the car off.

Weaponness lies under 50 miles from the Petuaria Way; there, take the next exit.

Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Weaponness is smaller a job than a run of under 50 miles towards York, and so say.

## Our arrival around Weaponness, and what occurs next

Our engineers come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Wheatcroft Community Primary School, near Oliver's Mount or on your own drive.

What fluid got in, the amount, and whether it ran: our technicians ask since those answers decide the work and price.

No one sets off before you've heard our quote by phone.

Draining the tank comes next, followed by a thorough flush of your system.

Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and none of that washes out unaided. Hence it counts more.

A test is last: before that, clean diesel goes in, and your filter is flushed or replaced as needed.

The motor is fired up next and tested to be sure it runs correctly, all before our technicians leave.

Unstarted cars usually mean a half-hour job after arrival. The kit is safe on a live forecourt, and hushed enough for a driveway after dark.

Your insurer usually wants an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both once this job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit.

While we travel, have a look at your policy; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.

Moving your car isn't necessary.

Wherever it sits — beside Bramcote Sports Complex, in a lay-by heading to Granville Square, at home — that is where it gets drained.

Ring and ask rather than assuming if you're close to a border, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of St Edward the Confessor.

## For Weaponness motorists, the short version

Always, the cap; after that, the pour.

Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, anywhere around North Yorkshire, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank regardless — so leave the vehicle off and call 0333 366 0103.
