# Weatherhill: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, your ignition remains off and so does your motor.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

The trouble begins once it is sucked through the pump — it won't ignite, and it will not combine with diesel.

If your engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally drained and thoroughly flushed where your car sits in Weatherhill.

Nothing comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

## Weatherhill, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do straight away

Do:

- Remove your keys, which prevents someone switching the electrics on.

- Put your hazards on if you are at all close to moving traffic.

- So you can give us which fluid it was and about how much, save the till receipt or the empty bottle.

- Ring right where you are. Quote a RH6 9 postcode or the nearest street name, and no one has to hunt for you.

Never:

- Moving your car even a few yards is no reason to fire up your engine.

- Many diesels run their pump the moment your ignition goes on, so keep it off.

- No more fuel on top. The AdBlue will not blend, and so it is pointless.

- Leave the vehicle where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short way down Weatherhill Road.

- Don't try to drain the car yourself by the kerbside.

Ask the people behind the counter to help you roll the vehicle off the island if you're on a forecourt around Weatherhill, whether it is the BP or elsewhere.

On that drive, the vehicle stays exactly where it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Not your engine but the exhaust is where AdBlue belongs.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to fresh it.

Not one side suits the other: urea doesn't belong in a pump, and a pump cannot deal with urea.

It doesn't combine. Once it is poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves nothing like diesel.

It drops, since it is denser than diesel, and pools low where the pickup draws its supply from.

Simplest of all: a vehicle that had AdBlue in Wasp Green last night and hasn't been started since. The liquid sits at the foot of that tank, untouched — though it would be first through once your motor starts, ahead of any diesel at all.

After it is drawn in, the damage comes in two forms.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps running on the components it gets to for as long as it stays there.

Pipes carrying AdBlue spell damage overnight for a vehicle parked around Weatherhill. Only inside your tank, it stays the same.

Then there is the water: it brings no protection to the components that need it most — the injection pump and every injector.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse

Put petrol in a diesel at the Shell and you have a fault of thin fuel.

It mixes with the diesel, and while it's inside the tank it does no harm; the harm comes from running the motor on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid itself is simply the wrong one.

It can't just be run through, since it doesn't burn.

It doesn't stay mixed, so it cannot be thinned. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your motor "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in Keepers Corner or the middle of Weatherhill.

The same good news applies as with petrol.

Emptying a tank is the easiest part on any fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue stays in it — anywhere across Surrey your vehicle sits.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Weatherhill?

Many vehicles put the AdBlue filler beside the diesel one, occasionally under a single flap, and after dark the two may look identical. Nobody means it.

Mostly it's not the forecourt: a driver buys a bottle heading home and pours it in outside the house.

It tends to occur in a couple of familiar ways.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Burstow Primary School the refill is rushed.

After work, a container is tipped in on a driveway near Cooper Close.

Else, after dark outside The Plough & Furrow, the car is topped up by someone using that flap for the first time.

It happens most in the cars people know least: a hire car, a new vehicle, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Wherever you are around Weatherhill or the remainder of Surrey, it's the same slip and the same first answer: leave the car off.

## Started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Weatherhill?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

With any running, it travels to the injection pump and every injector, after passing via the filter and pipework.

Maybe returning from Weatherhill Common, or midway across Weatherhill, your motor may run rough, smoke, lose pace, light up your dash or stall.

When safe, pull over and switch everything off — without restarting to test.

More of it is pulled through with each start.

On the M23, under a mile from Weatherhill, the next junction is where to exit, and somewhere safe is where to park — not carrying on.

How far it went counts. A couple of hundred yards across Weatherhill to the car park by St Bartholomew is a very different job from a run towards Westminster, under 25 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with each mile.

Tell us about how far it had come.

Once your engine has been started, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where the car has come to a stop.

Lasting damage is very uncommon when it is spotted quickly.

## Weatherhill: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

The vehicle stays where it is, whether that is a road near Smallfield Banger Racing Track, a driveway, a lay-by or a forecourt in Weatherhill, and the van travels to it.

Three replies shape the job, so before anything else we ask which fluid went in, roughly what quantity, and if your motor has turned over.

The contaminated diesel and the urea leave as one after that tank is drained, right there.

Residue from AdBlue won't flush out by itself, and so the fuel system gets a full flush, which matters much more with urea than with petrol.

The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

If the engine has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once our engineers are there.

The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Bleeding the fuel system with new diesel comes at the end.

After that our engineers fire it up and you set off, whether from a parking space outside Horley or a drive around Weatherhill.

The check before we leave is that it runs correctly on clean diesel.

Because the job is done in its entirety where the vehicle is, a garage never comes into it.

Afterwards, you are given paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer.

## About Weatherhill itself

Weatherhill is a suburban area in Surrey, situated inland at an elevation of 57 metres, and is located approximately 23 miles from London. Weatherhill is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock, and is surrounded by nearby places such as Smallfield, Burstow, and Outwood. Weatherhill has a population of around 1789 residents, and is part of the wider South East region. Weatherhill's setting is typical of the Surrey countryside, with rolling hills and wooded areas nearby.

## AdBlue drains across Weatherhill and Surrey

Smallfield, Burstow and Outwood are among the towns near Weatherhill that the same teams serve, along with most of Surrey further out, over the RH postcode area.

If you're near a border, or somewhere hard to describe, ring and ask rather than assuming.

Wherever your vehicle sits — your driveway at home, a residential street, a parking area, a filling station — our engineers empty it there, with no need to take it to us; which suits Weatherhill, a residential suburb, well.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Weatherhill

Each job differs, and so no fixed quote would be fair.

The price moves first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that was put in. After that it depends on where the vehicle is and whether a van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight space behind Thunderfield Castle (Site of).

That's why each call from Weatherhill starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and whether it's run.

Their replies shrink the range down to a single number.

You get that price by phone, before anybody heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

## Weatherhill: still beside the vehicle?

Leaving the vehicle alone is, right now, the most useful thing you can do.

Keys out, engine off, ignition off.

Phone 0333 366 0103 then tell us it is AdBlue, roughly how much, and whether it's run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, in Weatherhill or anywhere around Surrey.
