# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Welby? Keep It Switched Off

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then leave the engine off — and your ignition too.

Chemically, AdBlue is simply urea in water.

It doesn't burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the harm it does begins when the system pulls it in.

If the motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually emptied and thoroughly cleaned where the car stands around Welby.

First, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Welby: the first few minutes

Do these:

- So no one can turn the ignition on, take the keys away.

- Put the hazards on if you are anywhere near moving traffic.

- The empty bottle or the till receipt tells us the fluid and the quantity, and so don't throw it away.

- The van finds you fastest with a postcode starting LE14 3, or just the name of a street nearby, and so call from the spot.

Never:

- No starting your engine — not briefly, not to shift the vehicle.

- Your ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, turning it on is enough to start your pump.

- AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra diesel will not weaken it.

- Any driving at all is best avoided, including a short way down Saint Bartholomews Way.

- Emptying your tank on your own by the road is not one to try.

Rolling your vehicle away from the pumps is a job for staff to help with, wherever Welby forecourt you are on, the Esso or any other.

On your own drive, don't move it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the engine.

Stored in a separate tank, it's squirted into the exhaust stream to clean the gases.

No part in a fuel pump is designed for this liquid — and no part of it was intended to travel through one.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, once poured in, won't. The behaviour is not at all like diesel's.

It's heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and collects at the bottom of that tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from.

The first thing your fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Melton Mowbray last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the simple case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

It causes two kinds of harm from there.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps working on the parts it hits for as long as it stays there.

By daybreak, a vehicle sitting around Welby with AdBlue through its pipework gets worse; where it is only in your tank, nothing changes.

Then there is the water: it brings no lubrication to the parts that need it most — the injection pump and each injector.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is commonly more significant than petrol

Petrol put into a diesel on BP's forecourt leaves the fuel thin — that is the whole problem.

Blended through the diesel and left still, it is harmless for now; running the motor is the damage.

AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether.

Because it doesn't burn, running it through isn't an option.

Deposits and corrosion stay through the following tankful, and AdBlue separates again out of your diesel, so thinning it can't work. Hence the flush matters so much, and turning the key "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than almost any other slip — in Ab Kettleby or the heart of Welby alike.

As with petrol, there's good news.

Not started? Then the AdBlue sits only in the tank, the easiest section of the entire system to clear, anywhere the car has come to rest in Leicestershire.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Welby

It is not deliberate. Plenty of cars keep the AdBlue cap beside the diesel inlet, occasionally under a single flap, and mixing them up is easy after dark.

Usually it is never the forecourt: someone buys a bottle driving home and pours it in at home.

The ways it happens are few and familiar.

The top-up is hurried outside St Mary's Church of England Primary School, because your dash flashed with a warning as the children were taken in.

Someone pours the bottle in outside their house, just off Welby Lane, as the day ends.

Another pattern: dim light, a pub car park by The Welby, and a driver using that flap the first time.

The least known vehicles get it most — hire cars, brand-new ones, company ones, and the other vehicle of a home with one of each fuels.

Leave it off: that's the first step to an identical slip, anywhere in Welby or the rest of Leicestershire you are.

## Started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Welby?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer inside that tank.

Via your filter, through the lines, and — with any running — into the injection pump and every injector: that's how far it has gone.

You may see the motor running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from Oak Plantation or halfway across Welby.

When safe, pull over then switch everything off — without turning it on again to see.

With each start, more of it is pulled through.

On the M1, under 25 miles from Welby, the first junction is where to exit, and somewhere safe is where to park — not carrying on.

How far it went matters. A few hundred yards across Welby to the car park by St Bartholomew is a very different job from a run towards Leicester, under 15 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with each mile.

About how far it had come is worth telling us.

Wherever the car came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to clean out after the engine has been started.

Long-term damage is very uncommon if it is spotted early.

## What clearing AdBlue from a diesel involves around Welby

The car remains put, whether that's a road beside Welby Lane Mission Church, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt in Welby, and our van comes to it.

Before anything else we ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether your motor has run, since those answers decide this work.

Then that tank is drained where your car waits, and so the contaminated fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

A full flush counts much more after AdBlue than with petrol, since residue will not wash out by itself.

After that, your filter: cleaned, or replaced if it has to be. After that clean diesel, and then a test of your car.

If the engine hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we arrive.

Our equipment is explosion-proof, so a live filling station is no issue, and it's quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

New diesel goes in to bleed your system, and that's the final step.

Whether it's a parking space at Melton Mowbray or a driveway around Welby, that is where our engineers fire it up and you drive off.

We check it runs correctly on new diesel before leaving.

Our technicians do it all wherever the vehicle has stopped, and it never has to be taken to a garage.

The insurer will want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — each handed over afterwards.

## About Welby itself

Welby is a small locality in Leicestershire, situated inland at an elevation of 117 metres, with detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Welby lies approximately 13.7 miles east of Leicester and 94 miles north of London, near to other localities such as Potter Hill and Asfordby Hill. Welby is surrounded by rolling countryside and is close to The Valley, a nearby area of scenic interest. Welby has a population of around 549 residents, making it a small and quiet community.

## AdBlue drains in Welby and across Leicestershire

The vans that answer AdBlue call-outs around Welby also cover the locations about it, Potter Hill, Asfordby Hill and The Valley among them, and most of Leicestershire beyond, across the LE postcode area.

If you are near a border, or somewhere hard to describe, ring and ask rather than guessing.

Welby is a small village, and a mobile drain suits it: whether the vehicle is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our engineers drain it where it is, so it never needs to be moved to us.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Welby

Since each callouts vary, a flat figure wouldn't be fair.

Three things change the cost: whether the motor has run and for how long, how much AdBlue was put in, and where the car is. That last one turns on whether our van can get to it safely, and an open drive is easier than a tight gap behind The Cove.

That's why each call from Welby starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and whether it has run.

Given them, the range narrows to a single firm figure.

Before anyone heads out, you hear the price by phone. And you pay on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing in advance.

As our engineer is on the way, check your policy: many cover misfuelling.

## Still alongside the car in Welby?

Then, the most helpful thing to do with the vehicle is to not touch it.

Ignition off, engine off, keys out.

Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us it is AdBlue, about how much, and if it's run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, in Welby or anywhere across Leicestershire.
