# Well Bank: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? In that case put this page aside a moment, keep the ignition and motor off, then call 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the engine runs, it is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Well Bank.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Not one fluid but two: that's what plenty of newer diesels around Well Bank and Holden Vale run, with diesel for your engine.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust gas and cleans it.

Every tank comes with one filler of its own.

Some cars keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others place the two side by side behind one flap.

Filling the diesel side at the pump happens constantly.

A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less commonly.

It's in that gap that the mistake lives.

## Well Bank: how AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from the vehicle, and letting it run out leads to limp mode — hence a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off Queen Anne Street, perhaps at Black Bull on the way home that evening.

The old car's filler is where the hand reaches — yet a hire car, a new motor or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That is the second thing: an unfamiliar motor.

Nothing halts the pour once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Haslingden or the heart of Well Bank: it takes the same few seconds either way.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Look at these first, at a forecourt around Well Bank or a driveway over in Waterfoot. A few seconds, no more.

- Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Trust the cap, not its position.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many cars, the AdBlue one.

- Lift the filler flap and look for a label — plenty of motors mark what goes in each inlet right there.

- Can't see it next to the diesel inlet? In that case look below the bonnet or inside the boot — the handbook will say where.

- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park at Accrington? Check with whoever drove it last before you set off, rather than when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Lancashire that is.

- Stop somewhere level, motor off, with time in hand — never rushing on the side of Thomas Street.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, perhaps, yet it works.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the car on.

- Stop once your tank fills or the bottle runs dry; until then, pour gently through the own spout.

- Close the cap, and look again — making sure the diesel filler remained shut the whole time. After that, start the vehicle.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Stage five is off limits.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Well Bank already?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your engine.

The fuel pump runs on plenty of diesels as soon as your ignition is switched on — so leave it off.

Diluting it with more diesel fails, since AdBlue settles to the base instead of mixing — and that's where your fuel is sucked from.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it's the Texaco or the another forecourt nearby, ask the attendants to help roll the vehicle clear of the petrol pump.

If you are on your own driveway in Well Bank, leave the car where it sits.

Already started? Pull over once it's safe, then switch off.

Well Bank lies under 3 miles from the M66; there, use the next exit.

A short hop across Well Bank is a smaller job than a run towards Salford, under 25 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Our arrival around Well Bank, and what takes place next

By Haslingden St James Church of England Primary School, close to Haslingden Library or on your own driveway: wherever the car has stopped, we come to it.

The answers settle this work and our quote, so we ask what was put in, about how much, and whether it's run.

That price is given over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

Then that tank is drained and the fuel system purged thoroughly.

Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and none of it clears out unaided. That is why it counts more.

Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

We do not leave until it has been fired up and is running correctly.

Unrun vehicles usually need a half-hour visit from the moment we arrive. The kit is safe on a busy forecourt, and quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

No money in advance; you settle up that day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
