# How It Occurs and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Well Green

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and your ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103.

Normally, if the motor has not turned, it is drained and thoroughly rinsed where your car is around Well Green.

Here in advance? In that case the rest covers why it happens and how to stop it happening at all.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Many modern diesels around Timperley, like those in Well Green, run on two fluids; your motor gets only your diesel.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust stream and cleans it.

Each tank comes with a filler of its own.

Some cars keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others have both side by side under one flap.

Diesel goes in on every filling station call-out, week in, week out.

Seldom filled, AdBlue normally goes in from a bottle, tipped by a driver who must stop and think which cap it needs.

The mistake grows in the gap between them.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Well Green: how it happens

It is seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out completely, your vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Canterbury Road before work, or in the car park at The Bull's Head on the way home.

Then the vehicle is new. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

No part stops the tip once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

It's a few seconds, be it out in Davenport Green or bang in the centre of Well Green.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Look at these first, at a forecourt in Well Green or a drive over in Newall Green. Seconds, no more.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally is not. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- Many vehicles give AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- Can't see it beside the diesel filler? In that case look below the bonnet or inside the boot — the owner's manual will say which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Hale? Check with the person who drove the car last before you set off, rather than when the light goes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

Wherever around Greater Manchester the light comes on, this is a routine for the day.

- Turn off after you park — level ground, engine stopped, and not rushed by Dorchester Close at the roadside.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" out loud while unscrewing it. It seems silly. It does the trick.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Before starting the car, close the cap and check again that the diesel cap was never opened off.

Find at stage two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? Then stop just there.

Stage five stays off limits.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Well Green?

Don't start the motor: that's how the short order of things begins.

The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels as soon as your ignition is switched on — and so leave it off.

Topping up with diesel won't weaken it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the base of that tank, right where fuel is drawn from.

The staff at Warburton Service Station, Shell or any forecourt will normally lend a hand pushing the car away if asked.

On your own drive in Well Green? So your car stays put.

Already run? Stop once it's sensible, then turn off.

Well Green lies under a mile from the M56; there, use the next exit.

About how far did it go? Hopping across Well Green is smaller work than a run of under 10 miles to Salford, so tell us.

## What happens when we get there around Well Green

Anywhere your car came to rest, whether by Well Green Primary School, beside Bowdon Rugby Football Union Club or at home, the van travels to it.

The answers determine the work and the quote, and so we ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether it has run.

No one sets off before you've had our quote by phone.

The fuel system is then flushed thoroughly, once that tank is emptied.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own.

The filter flushed or, if needed, swapped; fresh diesel in; then a test of the vehicle.

Before we go, our engineers fire it up and make sure that it's running correctly.

With pumps fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where your engine hasn't run take roughly half an hour after we are there.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork your insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
