# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Wellow: How It Happens and How to Prevent It

Stop here a minute if the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your motor runs, it's normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Wellow.

Here in advance? Then the rest explains why it happens and what to stop it happening at all.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Many newer diesels on the roads round Wellow and Stony Littleton carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine.

AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, where spraying cleans the fumes.

Different tanks, separate fillers.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, the diesel side is topped up all the time.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less commonly.

The error lives in that gap.

## Wellow: how AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place

It is rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a driveway off Bath Hill before work, or in the car park outside The Fox & Badger heading home: that is where the hurried top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low your car warns you, and if it's gone, limp mode follows.

New-to-you vehicles come next, too. Rentals, new motors and company vehicles put their fillers in new places, and habit reaches for the cap used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, after started, carries on.

Whether it takes place in Twinhoe or the middle of Wellow, it is the same few seconds.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Whether a Wellow forecourt or a driveway out in White Ox Mead, spend a couple of seconds on these before any is poured in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually is not. Read it rather than going by position.

- The size. On many cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Lift the filler flap and look for a label — many motors mark what belongs in which inlet just there.

- The handbook shows where it is when your filler is not next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Freshford? Check with whoever drove it last before leaving, rather than when the light goes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

For the day the warning appears — anywhere it is around Somerset — a simple routine to follow.

- Pull in somewhere level, engine off, with time to spare — never rushing on the side of Mill Hill.

- Daft as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew the cap works — after you have found your filler and read the cap.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Before you start your car, close the cap and check again that your diesel cap never came off.

Spot at stage two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? Then stop right there.

Never go on to step five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Wellow?

Don't start the motor: that is how the short order of things begins.

Don't switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Diluting it with extra diesel won't work, since AdBlue settles to the base instead of blending — and that's where your fuel is drawn from.

The attendants at Esso, Murco or any forecourt will usually help pushing the vehicle clear if asked.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive in Wellow.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the engine has already run.

The next junction means the place to come off if you are on the M4, under 15 miles from Wellow.

Mileage matters — a quick hop across Wellow is a smaller job than driving under 5 miles towards Bath — so tell us about how far it went.

## When our technicians turn up in Wellow, what occurs?

By St Julian's Church School, close to Wellow Village Hall or on your own drive: wherever the car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

The replies settle the work and the price, so we ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it has run.

During the call itself, you hear the quote — before dispatch.

Then that tank is cleared and your system purged thoroughly.

Much more than with petrol, it counts here: crystals build up, some metals corrode, and none of it washes out on its own, no matter how long it sits.

Testing comes last: before that, clean diesel is added, and the fuel filter is cleaned or replaced as needed.

The engine is fired up next and checked to confirm it runs properly, all before we head off.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour once our technicians get there, as long as the motor has not run — and the pumps our engineers use are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet at night beside a house.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

The drain happens on the spot, be it a drive, a road near St. Julian's, or a lay-by towards Wellow Sports Ground.
