# West Buckland: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? In that case set this page down for now, keep the ignition and motor off, and call 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your engine runs, it is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in West Buckland.

Not happened yet? Below, the page covers the reasons it occurs and the how to prevent it altogether.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

No single fluid but two: that is what plenty of newer diesels near West Buckland and Hockholler carry, with diesel for your engine.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust stream and cleans it.

Each tank has its own filler.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the arrangement on many cars. On others, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in the boot instead.

Topping up the diesel side at the pump goes on all the time.

Seldom filled, AdBlue usually goes in from a bottle, tipped by a driver who has to stop and think which filler it needs.

It is in that gap that the mistake happens.

## West Buckland: how AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs

It is rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Hurry comes from the warning. The vehicle warns you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a driveway off Church Drive, or heading home in the car park outside The World's End.

Then the car is new. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spouted bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, once started, keeps on.

Silver Street or the middle of West Buckland: it is the same few seconds either way.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Be it a West Buckland forecourt or a driveway out in Chelston Heathfield, spend a few seconds over these before anything goes in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally is not. Read it instead of going by position.

- On many cars, the size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- A label inside your fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on many vehicles. Look for it.

- The handbook says which it lives when your filler is not next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park outside Taunton, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

Anywhere in Somerset the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Hockholler Road.

- Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" out loud as unscrewing it. It sounds daft. It works.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave it on.

- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle runs out.

- Before you start the vehicle, shut the cap and check again that your diesel cap never opened off.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Don't go on to step five.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in West Buckland?

Do not start your motor: that is how the short order of things begins.

The fuel pump runs on many diesels the moment the ignition is switched on — so keep it off.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is drawn from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.

The attendants at Monument Fuels, Texaco or another forecourt will normally help pushing the car clear when you ask.

Your own drive around West Buckland is where it should stay.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

## Our arrival around West Buckland, and what takes place next

By West Buckland Primary School, near West Buckland Village Hall or on your own drive: wherever your car has stopped, our technicians come to it.

Both the work and our quote depend on three replies — what fluid, what amount, and if it's run — so we ask.

You get that price on the phone, before anyone heads out.

Draining your tank comes next, followed by a full flush of your system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that counts more here than with petrol.

After the filter has been cleaned — or renewed, if required — fresh diesel is added, and finally the car gets tested.

Before leaving, our engineers start it and confirm that it is running correctly.

If the engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.
