# How It Occurs and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in West End

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case put this page aside a moment, keep the ignition and engine off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Around West End, catching it before your engine runs normally means a drain and a thorough flush on the spot.

If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Not one fluid but two: that's what many newer diesels around West End and Townhill Park carry, with diesel feeding your engine.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust gas and cleans it.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

At the petrol pump, the diesel side gets filled all the time.

Far less commonly, the AdBlue side is topped up — normally from a bottle, by someone working out where it goes.

It is in that gap that the mistake happens.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around West End: how it happens

Carelessness rarely explains it. Instead is three things lining up together.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from the car, and letting it run out leads to limp mode — hence a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off Lower New Road, or at West End Brewery on the way home that evening.

New-to-you motors are next, as well. Rentals, new motors and company motors place their fillers differently, and habit reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

A spouted bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, after started, keeps on.

Whether it takes place in Hatch Bottom or the middle of West End, it is the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Check these first, on a forecourt in West End or a drive out in Midanbury. A few seconds, no more.

- Read the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue caps are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones usually are not.

- The size. On many vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Look inside the fuel flap: many cars carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler is not by your diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at Hedge End, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

Anywhere across Hampshire the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Upper New Road.

- Daft as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew the cap works — once you've located your filler and read the cap.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the vehicle on.

- Finish once that tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; before that, pour slowly through the own spout.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

Discover at the second or third step that AdBlue went in the wrong filler? That's where you stop.

Don't go on to stage five.

## West End: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Short list, then. First: the engine remains unstarted.

Keep the ignition off as well, because on plenty of diesels it by itself starts your fuel pump.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is sucked from.

At a forecourt — West End Service Station, Esso or any other — the staff will usually help push your car away, when you ask.

Your own drive around West End is where it should stay.

When your motor has been run by now, pull over safely then turn the vehicle off.

West End sits under a mile from the M27; on it, use the next junction.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Southampton, under 5 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across West End.

## Our arrival around West End, and what takes place next

By Saint James' Church of England Primary School, near West End Tree or on your own driveway: wherever your car has stopped, our technicians come to it.

Both the work and our quote rest on three replies — which liquid, which quantity, and whether it has run — so our engineers ask.

You hear that price by phone, before anybody heads out.

Then the tank is drained and your system purged thoroughly.

More than with petrol, it counts here: crystals build up, certain metals are attacked, and none of it washes out on its own, however long it sits.

Once your filter is flushed — or renewed, where required — fresh diesel is added, and then your vehicle gets tested.

We do not go until it has been fired up and is running smoothly.

Using pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the motor has not run take roughly half an hour once our engineers arrive.

No money in advance; you settle up on the day. At the end, a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

It is worth looking at your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.

## AdBlue drains round West End, and Hampshire beyond

Being a small village, West End shares its vans surrounding areas — Harefield, Thornhill Park — right across SO postcodes and the wider area around them.

Quickest of all: give a SO30 3 postcode to the van.

Your car stays where it is.

We drain it where it is — a side street near West End Museum, a lay-by on the way to Hatch Grange, a drive.

If you're near a border, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of West End Library, ring and ask rather than assuming.

## In short, for West End drivers

Read the cap before you pour.

Petrol in Diesel drains it on the spot, anywhere around Hampshire, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank regardless — and so leave it off then phone 0333 366 0103.
