# West End: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? In that case put this page aside a moment, leave the ignition and motor off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Normally, when the motor hasn't turned, it is emptied and thoroughly cleaned where the car is in West End.

Nothing happened yet? Further down, the page explains the reasons it happens and the how to prevent it altogether.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Diesel goes to the engine — yet many newer diesels seen around West End and Somerton carry another liquid as well.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, and there spraying cleans the fumes.

Every tank has a filler of its own.

Other motors keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty more place both together behind one flap.

The diesel side is filled at the pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is filled far less regularly, normally from a bottle, and usually by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

It's in that gap that the slip happens.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank happen in West End?

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from the car, and letting it run dry means limp mode — so a hurried top-up, maybe before work off St Cleer's Orchard, or outside The Royal Oak on the way home that evening.

Then the car is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Third, the spout goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in just as easily, and after the tip begins, nothing stops it.

May Pole Knap or the heart of West End: it takes the same few seconds either way.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Check these first, at a forecourt in West End or a driveway over in Northfield. A few seconds, no more.

- Read the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue ones are regularly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally aren't.

- The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- A label inside the fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Check for it.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by the diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The previous driver will know. Check as you collect a rental or company car — at Yeovil Pen Mill's car park, say — rather than when the warning appears.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

The day the light goes on, wherever around Somerset, use this routine.

- Turn off once parked — level ground, engine stopped, and never in a rush beside St Cleers Way on the verge.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave it on.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Before you start the car, close the cap and check again that your diesel cap never opened off.

Find at the second or third step that AdBlue went into the wrong filler? That is where you stop.

Stage five is off limits.

## West End: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the motor.

Keep the ignition off as well, because on plenty of diesels switching it on by itself runs the fuel pump.

Diluting it with extra diesel won't work, since AdBlue sinks to the bottom rather than mixing — and that's where your fuel is sucked from.

At a forecourt — Esso, Texaco or another — the attendants will normally help push the car clear, if you ask.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway in West End.

Already run? Pull over when it is sensible, then turn off.

The next junction means where to come off when you are on the M5, under 15 miles from West End.

A short hop across West End is a smaller job than a run towards Wells, under 15 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## West End: what happens when our engineers arrive

The van comes to the vehicle anywhere it stopped — your own drive, near Somerton Community Library, or outside King Ina Church of England Academy.

Our engineers ask what went in, about how much, and whether it's run, because those replies decide this work and our price.

That price is given on the call, before any van leaves.

Next: a drain, then a thorough flush of the whole system.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

A test comes last: before that, clean diesel goes in, and the filter is cleaned or changed if necessary.

Before leaving, we start it and make sure that it's running smoothly.

Unstarted cars usually need a half-hour visit after arrival. The kit is safe on a live filling station, and hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork an insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

## About West End and where it is

West End is a suburban area in Somerset, situated inland at an elevation of 38 metres, with semi-detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. West End lies approximately 11.6 miles from the city of Wells and is surrounded by nearby places such as May Pole Knap, St Cleers, and Behind Berry. West End is part of the larger South West region, with London being around 117.2 miles away. West End has a population of around 3745 residents.

## West End and Somerset: AdBlue drains across the area

West End is a residential suburb, and our teams that cover it also work the towns around it, St Cleers and Behind Berry among them, across the TA postcode area.

A postcode starting TA11 6 gets the van to you fastest.

Your car stays put.

Draining takes place on the spot, be it a driveway, a street near Brunel Shopping Precinct, or a lay-by on the way to Long Sutton Plantation.

Assuming doesn't help at the back of West Street Church, on a boundary, or somewhere hard to pin down; phone and ask.

## West End drivers: the short version

Always, the cap; then, the tip.

Petrol in Diesel drains it where it stands, anywhere in Somerset, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank regardless — so leave the car off and ring 0333 366 0103.
