# Why It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in West Ham

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and your ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a full flush, done just where the car sits around West Ham, is usually all it takes if found before the motor runs.

The rest of this page covers why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't — handy if you're reading before it has happened.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Many modern diesels around Stratford Marsh, like those in West Ham, run on two liquids; your engine takes just your diesel.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust stream and cleans it.

Every tank comes with a filler of its own.

Plenty of motors share a single flap for the two, while others put the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is fuelled at the pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less often, normally from a bottle, and normally by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank happen in West Ham?

It's rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a drive off Plaistow Road before work, or in the car park at The Greyhound on the way home: that's where the rushed top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low your car warns you, and once it's empty, limp mode kicks in.

Then, your hand reaches for the cap it knew on the old car — since a rental car, a new motor or a company car places the fillers where your last one did not.

A spout-topped bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, after begun, carries on.

Mill Meads or the middle of West Ham: it is the same few seconds in both.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A couple of seconds is all these take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a drive in Plaistow or a forecourt around West Ham.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally is not. Read it rather than going by position.

- Check the size: the smaller neck is, on plenty of vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- Open the flap and check for a label — plenty of cars mark which belongs in which inlet just there.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler is if it's not by the diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside the nearest station.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

For the day the light comes on — anywhere it is across Greater London — a routine to use.

- Stop on level, engine off, with time in hand — never hurried on the side of Church Street.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- The two behind a single flap? Then make sure the cap on the diesel filler is still shut before lifting the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Before starting your car, shut the cap and check again that your diesel cap never opened off.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Stage five stays off limits.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around West Ham?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your motor.

On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch it on.

Diluting it with more diesel won't work, since AdBlue settles to the bottom rather than blending — and that is where your fuel is sucked from.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it is the Esso or the Tesco, ask the staff to help push the car away from the petrol pump.

Your own drive around West Ham is where it stays.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your engine has already run.

On the M11, under 5 miles from West Ham, that means the next junction.

A short hop across West Ham is a smaller job than a run towards London, under 5 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Our arrival around West Ham, and what occurs next

By West Ham Church Primary School, near Site of Newham Boys Boxing Club or on your own drive: wherever the car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Both the work and the quote rest on three answers — which fluid, what amount, and if it's run — so we ask.

No one heads out until you've had our quote over the phone.

Then the tank is emptied and the fuel system purged thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more here than with petrol.

Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

We do not leave until it has been started and is running properly.

Unstarted vehicles usually mean a half-hour visit from arrival. The equipment is safe on a live filling station, and quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork your insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

It is worth looking at your policy as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.

## AdBlue drains about West Ham, and Greater London beyond

West Ham is a small village, and our teams that cover it also work the towns near it, Stratford and Upton among them, across the E postcode area.

The van gets to you fastest with a postcode starting E15 3.

Moving the vehicle isn't necessary.

A driveway, a lay-by on the way to Park Village Oasis, a side street close to Iglesia ni Cristo: our engineers drain the car where it sits.

If you are close to a border, or somewhere hard to explain like the back of All Saints, West Ham, ring and ask rather than guessing.

## The short version for West Ham drivers

Pour no AdBlue till you've read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank anyway, leave the car off and phone 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel empties it where it sits, anywhere in Greater London.
