# Why It Happens and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in West Hill

Pause here a minute if your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

Usually, if the motor has not turned, it's emptied and fully purged where your car is around West Hill.

Nothing happened yet? Further down, the page explains the reasons it happens and the how to prevent it for good.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Many modern diesels around Bromyard Downs, like those in West Hill, run on two liquids; your engine gets only your diesel.

AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it is sent to the exhaust, and there a spray cleans the fumes.

Separate tanks, different fillers.

Other motors put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty more have both together behind one flap.

The diesel side is topped up at the pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less commonly, normally from a bottle, and usually by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

It's in the gap that the slip lives.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around West Hill: how it occurs

It's rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from the vehicle, and letting it run dry leads to limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Drovers Orchard, perhaps outside Rose and Lion on the way home after work.

New-to-you motors come second, too. Rentals, new vehicles and company motors place their fillers differently, and the hand goes for the cap used on the old one.

Third, the spout fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in just as easily, and after the pour begins, nothing stops it.

Whether it occurs in Flaggoners Green or the middle of West Hill, it's the same few seconds.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Cricks Green or a forecourt in West Hill, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Check the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue caps are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually aren't.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of cars, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside the fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on plenty of cars. Check for it.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler sits if it is not by your diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- The previous driver will know. Ask when you collect a hire car or company car — from Malvern Link's car park, perhaps — not once the warning appears.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

Anywhere in Herefordshire the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Stop somewhere level, engine off, with time to spare — never hurried on the side of Worcester Road.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where the two sit under a flap, confirm it's shut before the bottle comes up.

- Stop when the tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; before that, tip slowly using its own spout.

- Only after that, start the vehicle: close the cap, check once more, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Never go on to stage five.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank around West Hill already?

Do not start your engine: that is how the short order of things begins.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch the vehicle on.

Diluting it with extra diesel fails, because AdBlue settles to the bottom rather than blending — and that's where the fuel is pulled from.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it is the Maple Leaf or the Texaco, ask the attendants to help push the car away from the petrol pump.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive in West Hill.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your engine has already run.

Leave the M5 — under 15 miles out of West Hill — at the next exit.

A short hop across West Hill is a smaller job than a run towards Hereford, under 15 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

## When our engineers get there around West Hill, what occurs?

Outside St Peter's Primary School, close to Bromyard Cricket Club or on your own driveway: wherever the car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Both the work and our quote rest on three replies — which liquid, what quantity, and whether it has run — so we ask.

You get that quote on the phone, before anyone sets off.

Emptying the tank comes next, followed by a full flush of the system.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and none of it washes out by itself. That is why it matters more.

Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Next our engineers start the car and make sure it runs smoothly before we leave.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour after our technicians arrive, provided your engine has not run — and the pumps we use are safe on a live forecourt and quiet after dark beside a house.

No money in advance; you settle up on the day. At the end, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies — and so use the wait to look at yours.
