# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Westbury: How It Happens and How to Stop It

Stop here a minute when the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and call 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a thorough flush, done just where the vehicle sits around Westbury, is usually all it takes if found before your motor runs.

Here in advance? Then what follows explains how it happens and how to stop it happening at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Plenty of modern diesels in Penleigh, as well as Westbury, carry on two liquids; the motor takes just your diesel.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust stream to clean it.

There's a filler for every tank.

Many of motors share a single flap for the two, whereas some put the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is fuelled at the petrol pump all the time.

Someone who has to stop and think where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less regularly.

That gap is where the mistake lives.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Westbury: how it happens

Carelessness seldom causes it. What does is three things coming up at once.

Hurry comes from the warning. The vehicle tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a drive off All Saints Crescent, or heading home in the car park outside The Angel.

The old car's cap is where the hand reaches — but a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That is a second thing: a strange vehicle.

Third, the bottle goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in just as readily, and after the tip starts, nothing halts it.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Westbury or out in Chalford.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Be it a Westbury forecourt or a drive out in Heywood, spend a couple of seconds over these before anything goes in.

- Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- The size. On many vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Check inside your fuel flap: plenty of motors have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- The handbook says which it is if the filler is not next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at the nearest station, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

Wherever in Wiltshire the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of High Street.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew it. It seems silly. It does the trick.

- The two behind a single flap? Then confirm the cap on your diesel side stays shut before lifting the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

Discover at the second or third step that the bottle went into the diesel filler? That is where you stop.

Step five is off limits.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Westbury?

Don't start the engine: that is where the short order of things begins.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch it on.

Thinning it with extra diesel won't work, because AdBlue settles to the base instead of mixing — and that's where your fuel is drawn from.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it is the Esso or the Shell, ask the attendants to help push the car clear of the petrol pump.

If you're on your own drive around Westbury, leave it where it sits.

Already started? Pull over when it's sensible, then turn off.

Come off the M4 — under 25 miles out of Westbury — at the first exit.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Bath, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Westbury.

## Westbury: what occurs when we get there

Our van reaches the car anywhere it has come to rest — your own drive, near Westbury Library, or by Bitham Brook Primary School.

What liquid went in, the quantity, and whether it ran: our technicians ask because those answers set the work and quote.

No one heads out until you have had our price over the phone.

After that: a drain, then a thorough flush of the entire system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more here than with petrol.

The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

Before we go, our engineers start the engine and make sure that it is running smoothly.

Using pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the motor has not run take roughly half an hour once we are there.

Nothing upfront; you settle up that day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

Before we get there, take a look at your policy; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.

## AdBlue drains round Westbury, and Wiltshire beyond

Throughout BA postcodes, the teams covering Westbury — a riverside town — work the nearby spots too, Westbury Leigh and The Ham among them.

Give a postcode beginning BA13 3, and our van arrives quickest.

The car remains where it is.

Draining takes place right there, whether a drive, a road near All Saints, or a layby towards Grassacres Park.

Guessing won't help behind Saint Bernadette of Lourdes, close to a border, or anywhere hard to pin down; ring and ask.

## For Westbury drivers, the short version

Before you pour, read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank anyway, leave the car off then phone 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel drains it where it waits, anywhere across Wiltshire.
