# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Westdene

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, the ignition remains off and so does the motor.

Chemically, AdBlue is simply urea in water.

As it is water-based, it will not ignite and won't blend with diesel; trouble just starts once the pump starts drawing it.

Caught before your engine has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Westdene.

Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

## What to do straight away, Westdene: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Do these:

- Remove the keys, and that stops someone switching the electrics on.

- Close to moving traffic? Then put the hazards on.

- So you can tell us which fluid it was and about what quantity, save your receipt or the empty bottle.

- The van finds you fastest with a postcode starting BN1 5, or just the name of a street close by, so call from the spot.

Things not to do:

- Not even briefly, and not to shift your car: your motor stays off.

- Your ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, switching it on is enough to start your fuel pump.

- No more fuel on top. The AdBlue won't blend, so it is pointless.

- Any driving at all is to be avoided, even a short way up Dyke Road Avenue.

- No draining it yourself, at all, on the verge.

The attendants on duty at any Westdene filling station — the Esso among them — will usually help pushing it aside if you ask.

If you are on your own drive, leave the car precisely where it stands.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no place in the motor.

Its own reservoir keeps it, and from there it is fed into the exhaust, and there it treats the gas.

A fuel pump is not made to take it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves very differently from fuel. It does not mix in.

It drops, because it's heavier than diesel, and settles low where the intake draws its supply from.

Easiest of all: a vehicle that got AdBlue in Patcham last night and hasn't been started since. The AdBlue sits at the base of the tank, untouched — but it would be first through if your engine runs, ahead of any diesel at all.

After it's sucked in, the harm comes in two forms.

What is left when the water goes is urea, which turns into crystals: they settle in tiny channels and block filters. Worse, it eats at some metals in the fuel system, and keeps going until it's flushed out.

Pipes carrying AdBlue mean harm by morning for a vehicle sitting in Westdene. Only inside that tank, it stays the same.

And there's the water: it brings no protection to the parts that need it the most — the high-pressure pump and every injector.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is regularly worse

Petrol put into a diesel on BP's forecourt makes your fuel watery — that is the whole fault.

No harm is done as long as it sits unused, blended into your diesel — only when the engine works on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is another matter: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all.

It doesn't burn, so it cannot just be run through.

Whether your vehicle sits in Hangleton or the heart of Westdene, firing it up "to see" costs more with AdBlue than nearly any other error, and the flush counts for more. The reasons: it won't remain mixed, so diluting it is impossible; and deposits and corrosion outlast the following tankful.

With AdBlue, the good news is no different from petrol.

If the engine hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside that tank, and the tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around East Sussex the car is sitting.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Westdene?

Plenty of motors place the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel one, now and then under a single flap, and in dim light the two can appear the same. No one intends it.

A container bought while heading home and poured in at home, rather than at the filling station, is the typical route.

It tends to take place in a couple of familiar ways.

The refill gets hurried outside Westdene Primary School, because your dash lit up with a warning as the kids were taken in.

In the evening, a container is tipped in on a drive close to Whitethorn Drive.

Or your car is topped up in the car park at The Nevill, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.

Rented motors, brand-new cars, company cars, or the second vehicle in a home with one of each: the least known vehicles see it the most.

Anywhere in East Sussex, Westdene included, the mistake doesn't change, and nor does the first step: keep it off.

## Westdene: started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer inside that tank.

Through the fuel filter, along the pipework, and — with any running time — on to the high-pressure pump and every injector: that's where it has gone.

Perhaps coming back from Three Cornered Copse, or part way across Westdene, your engine may run lumpy, smoke, lose pace, light up your dash or cut out.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart the car to check.

More of it is pulled through with each start.

If you were on the M23, under 25 miles from Westdene, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere safe instead of pressing on.

Each mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. That's why crossing Westdene to park near Church of the Ascension and a drive of under 3 miles for Brighton and Hove are such different jobs.

Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

Wherever your car came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to flush once the engine has been running.

Caught quickly, it very seldom leaves long-term damage.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Westdene?

A street by Withdean Sports Complex, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt: anywhere your vehicle has stopped in Westdene, our technicians come to it.

Three answers decide the work, and so first we ask which fluid got in, roughly what quantity, plus whether your motor has turned over.

Then your tank is drained where the car sits, and so the contaminated fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

A full flush counts much more with AdBlue than with petrol, since residue won't clear out by itself.

Testing the vehicle follows at the end, after clean diesel goes in and the fuel filter gets flushed or, if needed, replaced.

Not run? In that case expect about half an hour on site for most jobs.

Our equipment is explosion-proof, and so a live filling station is no issue, and it is quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

Priming your system with clean diesel comes at the end.

Firing it up comes next, and then you drive off from where your car is parked, outside Preston Park or on a drive in Westdene.

The test before we head off is that it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

No garage is needed at any stage, with the whole job done then and there.

At the end, there is paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer.

## About Westdene itself

Westdene is a suburban area situated on the outskirts of Brighton and Hove in East Sussex, with Westdene being close to the South Downs and approximately 110 metres above sea level. Westdene is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock and is located near other suburban areas such as Withdean and West Blatchington. Westdene has a population of around 3942 residents and is about 2.5 miles from the city centre of Brighton and Hove. Westdene is also relatively close to London, being around 45.1 miles away.

## Westdene and East Sussex: AdBlue drains across the area

AdBlue call-outs around Westdene go to vans that serve the towns around it — Withdean, West Blatchington as well as Waterhall — and most of East Sussex beyond, across BN postcodes.

Ring and check instead of guessing if you're by a county line, or somewhere tricky to pin down.

Anywhere the vehicle stands — your driveway at home, a residential street, a parking area, a forecourt — we drain it there, and there's no need to take it to us; which suits Westdene, a residential suburb, well.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Westdene: the cost of fixing it

Each job is different, and so not one single quote would be fair.

What shifts the price is, firstly, whether the engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and after that where the car is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight spot behind Fingermaze.

What went in, how much, plus if it ran: every Westdene enquiry begins by asking precisely that, before a quote, never after.

The answers turn a range into a straight price.

Our quote is given on the call, before anyone sets off; settling up comes on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

While our engineer is on the way, dig out your insurance: plenty cover misfuelling.

## Westdene: still next to the vehicle?

Then the most useful thing you can do is nothing to the car.

Keys out, motor off, ignition off.

Phone 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, the amount, and whether it ran are all our technicians ask. Petrol in Diesel handles the remainder across East Sussex, Westdene too.
