# How It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Westergate

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and your ignition off then call 0333 366 0103.

In Westergate, finding it before your engine runs normally leaves a drain and a full flush on the spot.

Here in advance? Then what follows covers how it comes about and what to stop it happening at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Plenty of modern diesels on the roads around Westergate and Aldingbourne carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust gas and cleans it.

Each tank comes with one filler of its own.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, your diesel side is topped up all the time.

Someone who has to stop and think where it goes usually tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less regularly.

It is in that gap that the error lives.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank occur in Westergate?

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

Haste comes from the warning. Your car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a drive off Olivers Meadow, or on the way home in the car park outside The Wilkes Head.

Then the vehicle is new. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, after begun, keeps on.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Westergate or out in Nyton.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Whether a Westergate forecourt or a drive over in Norton, spend a couple of seconds over these before anything goes in.

- Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Trust the cap, not its position.

- Many vehicles fit AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler is if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Whoever had it before knows. Ask as you collect a rental or company car — from Barnham's car park, say — not once the warning appears.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

For the day the warning appears — wherever it is in West Sussex — a routine to use.

- Not in a rush on the side of Westergate Street, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park and switch off properly.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" out loud while unscrewing it. It sounds daft. It does the trick.

- Both under one flap? So confirm the cap on your diesel side is still shut before lifting the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start the car: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side.

Leave out stage five entirely.

## Westergate: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

What follows is a short order of things, beginning with not starting your motor.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch the car on.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is drawn from.

At a forecourt — the nearest petrol station, Esso or any other — the attendants will normally help push your car clear, when you ask.

Your own drive around Westergate is the place it stays.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the engine has already run.

Leave the Waterlooville Bypass — under 15 miles out of Westergate — at the next junction.

A short hop across Westergate is a smaller job than a run towards Chichester, under 5 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Our arrival in Westergate, and what happens next

The van reaches the vehicle wherever it stopped — your own driveway, beside Westergate Methodist Church, or by Eastergate CofE Primary School.

What liquid got in, the quantity, and whether it ran: we ask because those answers set both work and quote.

That quote is given over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

Then that tank is cleared and the system flushed thoroughly.

Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and neither washes out by itself. That is why it counts more.

After the filter is cleaned — or replaced, where required — clean diesel goes in, and finally your car is tested.

The motor is fired up next and checked to make sure it runs properly, all before our technicians go.

With pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where the engine hasn't run take about half an hour after our engineers are there.

Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork your insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

## AdBlue drains about Westergate, and West Sussex beyond

Westergate is a village, and our vans that cover it also work the towns around it, Woodgate and Eastergate among them, across the PO postcode area.

Our van reaches you fastest with a postcode starting PO20 3.

Your car stays put.

Anywhere it stands — beside Aldingbourne Community Sports Centre, in a lay-by en route to Nyton Spinney, at home — that is where it gets emptied.

Tricky to pin down, like the back of St George’s Church? Close to a county line? Asking beats assuming, and so ring.
