# Westfield: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then put this page aside for now, leave the ignition and motor off, then call 0333 366 0103.

Normally, when your engine has not run, it is emptied and fully purged where your vehicle sits around Westfield.

The remainder of this page covers why it takes place and how to ensure it doesn't — useful if you are reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Not one liquid but two: that is what plenty of newer diesels near Westfield and Dukesfield carry, with diesel for the engine.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it is sent to the exhaust, where a spray cleans the gas.

Each tank has its own filler.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the arrangement on many motors. On others, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in the boot instead.

Diesel gets filled on every forecourt call-out, week in, week out.

Rarely filled, AdBlue usually comes out of a bottle, tipped by a driver who must stop and think what filler it needs.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank happens around Westfield

It's hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Hurry follows from the warning. Your car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a driveway off Hale View, or heading home in the car park outside The Dockside Inn.

Then, your hand goes for the cap it knew on the old car — since a rental car, a new car or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

Nothing stops the tip once it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Westfield or out in Higher Runcorn.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you pour anything, on a drive in Runcorn or a forecourt around Westfield.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally is not. Read it rather than going by position.

- The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- A label inside your fuel flap often says which fuel goes where, on plenty of vehicles. Look for it.

- The handbook says where it lives when your filler is not next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park at Runcorn, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

Wherever across Cheshire the light comes on, this is a routine for the day.

- Turn off once parked — level ground, motor off, and never rushed beside Hillside Avenue on the verge.

- Daft as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — after you've found the filler and read it.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Before you start the car, shut the cap and look a second time that the diesel cap was never opened off.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side.

Leave out step five altogether.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Westfield?

The short order of things, beginning with no starting the engine.

Don't switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Thinning it with extra diesel won't work, because AdBlue sinks to the bottom instead of blending — and that is where the fuel is pulled from.

The attendants at North West Fuels, BP or any forecourt will usually lend a hand to push your car away if you ask.

If you're on your own drive in Westfield, leave it where it stands.

Where the engine has been run by now, pull over somewhere safe and switch the vehicle off.

On the M56, under 3 miles from Westfield, that means the next exit.

Mileage matters — a short hop across Westfield makes a smaller job than driving under 15 miles to Liverpool — so say roughly how far it went.

## When our technicians turn up in Westfield, what happens?

Anywhere the car has stopped, whether by Weston Point Primary Academy, beside Stone Carving or on your own drive, our van travels to it.

We ask what was put in, about how much, and whether it has run, because the answers determine this work and the price.

During the phone call itself, you are told our quote — before dispatch.

Emptying that tank comes next, then a full flush of the system.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own.

Filter flushed or, where it must be, replaced; fresh diesel in; then a check of the vehicle.

Before we go, we fire it up and check that it's running smoothly.

Unrun cars usually need a half-hour visit after the moment we arrive. The equipment is fine on a busy forecourt, and hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork an insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

Assuming doesn't help behind Private Thomas Jones, on a boundary, or anywhere hard to pin down; phone and ask.

Tip nothing until you have read the cap.
