# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Westfield? Don't Start It

Motor off, ignition off: that is where you begin if AdBlue has got into your diesel tank.

Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue.

The trouble begins once it's sucked through your lines — it will not ignite, and it will not blend with diesel.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Westfield, is generally all AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it is caught before your motor has run.

First, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank around Westfield

Do:

- Take your keys out, so nobody switches your ignition on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere close.

- Which product, and about how much quantity? Hang on to the bottle or the receipt, and we can see.

- Tell us a postcode starting TN35 4, or whatever street is closest, and the van reaches you directly — so ring wherever you stand.

Don't:

- Do not start your motor, even for a moment to move the vehicle.

- Many diesels run their fuel pump the instant the ignition goes on, so keep the vehicle off.

- No extra fuel added. The AdBlue will not mix, and so it is pointless.

- Any driving at all is to be avoided, even a short way up Workhouse Lane.

- Emptying your tank on your own beside the road is not one to try.

Rolling the car away from the pumps is a job for staff to help with, wherever Westfield forecourt you are on, the Esso included.

On your own driveway, do not touch it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

The engine isn't what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it.

Nothing in a fuel pump is made for this liquid — and no part of it was meant to go that way.

Inside a diesel tank it acts very differently from fuel. It does not mix in.

Heavier than diesel, it drops and collects underneath it — the very place the pickup draws from.

The first thing the system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a vehicle that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Baldslow last night, and has not been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has sucked it in.

From there it does two kinds of damage.

It attacks certain metals found in fuel components, attacking any part it reaches until it's cleared completely. And once the water evaporates, the urea forms crystals that block filters and lodge in tiny passages.

A vehicle left sitting around Westfield with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank isn't.

Water protects nothing. The injection pump and every injector need diesel running past them, so the water content damages them by itself.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it is commonly worse than petrol

Fill a diesel with petrol in error over at the Valero, and this issue is thinned fuel.

It mixes with the diesel, and while it's inside the tank it causes no harm; the damage comes from running your motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether.

Since it does not burn, running it through is not an option.

It doesn't stay mixed, so it can't be diluted. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the motor "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the car is in Brede or the middle of Westfield.

The same good news applies as with petrol.

If your motor hasn't run, the AdBlue is still in the tank, and your tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across East Sussex the car is standing.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Westfield: how it ends up there

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of vehicles sits right next to the diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

Most of the time it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the pump.

The ways it occurs are few and familiar.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Westfield School the top-up is rushed.

After work, a container goes in on a drive close to Cottage Lane.

Another pattern: darkness, a pub car park outside The New Inn, and a driver opening that flap for the first time.

The least familiar cars see it most — hire cars, new cars, company ones, and the spare vehicle in a family with one of each fuel types.

Wherever you're around Westfield or the remainder of East Sussex, it's the same mistake and the same first answer: leave it off.

## Already started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Westfield?

The AdBlue has left your tank, then.

Via the fuel filter, along the pipework, and — with any running — into the injection pump and every injector: that's how far it has gone.

Watch for rough running, smoke, falling power, warnings on the dash, or a cut-out — returning from Horseman's Wood, perhaps, or part way across Westfield.

Pull over when it is safe. Turn off. Keep the car off instead of restarting it to check.

More of that is pulled through with each start.

On the M20, under 25 miles from Westfield, the next junction is where to exit, and somewhere sensible is where to stop — not carrying on.

How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across Westfield to the car park by St John the Baptist is a very different job from a run towards Brighton and Hove, under 50 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with every mile.

Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once the engine has been started, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where your car has come to a stop.

Noticed soon, it very seldom leaves lasting damage.

## Westfield: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

Our engineers come to your car, wherever it has stopped in Westfield: a side street close to Farbanks Henge, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Before anything else we ask what got in, about how much, and whether the motor has been run, since those answers determine this work.

The polluted diesel and the urea come out together after that tank is drained, on the spot.

What remains from AdBlue won't wash away by itself, and so the whole system gets a full flush, which counts far more with urea than with petrol.

Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

Roughly half an hour on site is usual for most jobs where the engine has not run.

Explosion-proof pumps mean a live forecourt safe to work on, and they run quiet enough to spare the neighbours at night.

The final step is to bleed your system on fresh diesel.

After that our engineers start the engine and you head off, whether from a parking space at Doleham or a driveway around Westfield.

Before we go, we make sure it's running properly with clean diesel in.

The whole job is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to go to a workshop.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report after that, which is what insurers want.

## About Westfield itself

Westfield is a village in East Sussex, situated inland at an elevation of 41 metres, approximately 51 miles south of London. Westfield lies near several smaller settlements, including Great Maxfield, Kent Street, and Three Oaks. Westfield has a population of around 1583 people, predominantly living in detached houses. Westfield is also located near the city of Brighton and Hove, which is about 32 miles away.

## AdBlue drains across East Sussex, Westfield included

The teams that answer AdBlue jobs around Westfield also cover the places around it, Great Maxfield, Kent Street and Three Oaks among them, and most of East Sussex beyond, across the TN postcode area.

Guessing doesn't help close to a county line or somewhere tricky to describe; ring and check.

Anywhere the car stands — your drive at home, a residential street, a parking area, a forecourt — our engineers empty it on the spot, with no need to take it to us; that suits Westfield, a rural village, well.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Westfield?

There is no honest single price, because the jobs are not the same.

Whether the motor has been running, and for how long, comes first in what changes the cost. How much AdBlue went in comes next, and then the location of your car, since an open driveway is simpler for our van to get to safely than a tight gap behind Lady Mary Montgomerie.

What got in, how much, and whether the engine ran: each Westfield call opens by asking exactly that, before any figure, never afterwards.

Those replies shrink a range right down to a single figure.

You hear that price on the phone, before anybody heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van gets there.

## In Westfield and still beside your car?

Leaving your vehicle alone is, right now, the best move you can do.

Engine off, keys out, ignition off.

Say it's AdBlue, about how big an amount, and whether the engine ran, on 0333 366 0103. From there Petrol in Diesel handles it, in Westfield or wherever in East Sussex.
