# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Westham? Keep It Switched Off

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, the ignition stays off and so does your motor.

In plain terms, AdBlue is simply urea in water.

Being water-based, it will not ignite and never combines with diesel; trouble only starts once the pump begins pulling it.

If the motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally drained and thoroughly flushed where the car sits in Westham.

First, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank around Westham

Do:

- Keys out — then nobody can switch anything on.

- Put your hazards on if you're at all near moving traffic.

- The empty bottle or the receipt tells us the fluid and the amount, so do not bin it out.

- Call just where you are. Say a BN24 5 postcode or the nearest street sign, and nobody has to hunt for you.

Things not to do:

- No starting the motor — not for a second, not to shift your vehicle.

- Turning the key to ignition by itself starts the pump going on many diesels. Avoid it.

- Pouring in extra diesel doesn't help: AdBlue settles out instead of blending.

- Any driving at all is best avoided, even a short distance up High Street.

- No draining it yourself, at all, at the verge.

Ask the attendants to help you move your vehicle off the pumps if you're on a forecourt around Westham, whether it is the BP or somewhere else.

At your own drive, don't touch it at all.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no place in your engine.

From a dedicated tank it is fed straight to your exhaust, treating what the motor emits.

Nothing in an injection pump is designed for this liquid — and no part of it was meant to travel through one.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves really differently from fuel. It does not mix in.

It is heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of that tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from.

Easiest of all: a vehicle that got AdBlue in Friday Street last night and has not turned since. The AdBlue sits at the foot of your tank, undrawn — but it will be the first thing through if the motor runs, before any diesel at all.

Once it is sucked in, the damage comes in two forms.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it strands urea that crystallises in filters and tiny passages; and, because it attacks certain metals, every part it touches suffers for as long as it stays in there.

A vehicle left standing around Westham with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not.

Water protects nothing. The high-pressure pump and every injector need diesel running past them, so the water part damages them in its own right.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is regularly worse

A fault of thin fuel is what you get after fuelling a diesel with petrol at the Esso.

It mixes with the diesel, and while it's inside that tank it does no damage; the harm comes from running the motor on it.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally wrong liquid.

It doesn't burn, so it cannot simply be run through.

It doesn't stay mixed, and so it cannot be thinned. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your engine "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the car is in Pevensey Bay or the middle of Westham.

The same good news holds as with petrol.

Emptying a tank is the easiest job on any fuel system, and without running, the AdBlue stays in it — anywhere across East Sussex the car sits.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Westham?

Plenty of motors place the AdBlue filler alongside the diesel cap, occasionally behind a single flap, and in dim light the two may look the same. Nobody intends it.

A container picked up when driving home and poured in outside the house, rather than at the forecourt, is the usual route.

A couple of familiar ways cover most cases.

Hurrying, outside Pevensey and Westham CofE Primary School, after a warning light flashed on during the school run, someone refills the car.

After work, a bottle is tipped in on a drive close to Pevensey Park Road.

Another pattern: dim light, a pub car park outside The Heron, and a driver using that flap for the first time.

Rented motors, brand-new vehicles, company cars, or the spare car in a home with both fuels: the least familiar vehicles see it the most.

Wherever in East Sussex, Westham as well, the slip doesn't change, and nor does the first response: leave it switched off.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Westham, and the motor started?

The AdBlue has left your tank, then.

The fuel filter and lines have had it pulled through, and some running carries it on to the injection pump and every injector.

Maybe coming back from Pevensey Recreation and Sports Ground, or midway across Westham, the motor may run rough, smoke, lose power, light up your dash or cut out.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the car to check.

Each start pulls more of that through.

On the M23, under 50 miles from Westham, the next junction is where to leave, and somewhere sensible is where to park — not carrying on.

Each mile pushes the AdBlue further in. That's why crossing Westham to park beside Westham Village Hall and a drive of under 25 miles for Brighton and Hove are such distinct jobs.

Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Once the engine has been started, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where your car has stopped.

If it is noticed soon, permanent damage is very rare.

## What emptying AdBlue from a diesel involves around Westham

A road by St. Mary's, a driveway, a lay-by or a filling station: wherever the vehicle has stopped in Westham, our engineers come to it.

Three replies shape the work, and so before anything else our engineers ask what got in, about what quantity, and whether your engine has turned over.

Next, draining the tank right there removes the polluted diesel and the AdBlue in one go.

A careful flush matters far more after AdBlue than after petrol, since what remains won't clear away by itself.

After that, the filter: cleaned, or changed when it has to be. Then fresh diesel, then a test of the vehicle.

Most of these jobs are a half-hour job once our technicians turn up, provided the engine has not run.

The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Bleeding your system with fresh diesel comes at the end.

You head off as soon as our engineers have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a driveway in Westham or in a bay by Pevensey & Westham.

The check before we head off is that it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

No workshop is needed at any stage, with the whole job done then and there.

At the end, there is paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer.

## About Westham itself

Westham is a small coastal village in East Sussex, situated near the historic town of Pevensey and approximately 20 miles east of Brighton and Hove. Westham sits at a low elevation of around 5 metres above sea level, close to the South Downs National Park. Westham has a population of around 1200 people, predominantly living in semi-detached housing. Westham is also near other local places such as Chilley Green and Jenkins Green.

## Westham and East Sussex: AdBlue drains across the area

Over the BN postcode area, the vans taking AdBlue jobs around Westham reach most of East Sussex as well, Pevensey, Chilley Green and Jenkins Green included.

Guessing won't help by a county line or somewhere hard to pin down; ring and ask.

Wherever the car sits — a drive at home, a residential street, a car park, a forecourt — our engineers drain it on the spot, and there's no need to bring it to us; that suits Westham, a coastal village, well.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Westham?

Because each callouts differ, a single figure wouldn't be honest.

What shifts the price is, first, whether your engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and finally where your car is and whether a van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight spot behind Tudor Artillery Battery.

What went in, what quantity, and if the engine ran: every Westham call begins with exactly those, before any quote, not after.

With them, a range shrinks to a single firm figure.

Our quote is quoted during the call, before a van leaves; settling up happens on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

## Westham: still next to the vehicle?

Then the most handy thing you can do is nothing to your car.

Ignition off, motor off, keys out.

Say it was AdBlue, about what quantity, and whether it ran, on 0333 366 0103. From there Petrol in Diesel takes over, across Westham or anywhere in East Sussex.
