# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Weston: Why It Happens

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and the ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103.

In Weston, finding it before your motor turns normally leaves a drain and a thorough flush where it stands.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Many modern diesels around Higher Runcorn, like those in Weston, carry on two fluids; the engine takes just the diesel.

Your exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the fumes to fresh it, from a separate tank.

There is a filler for every tank.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the layout on a lot of motors. On others, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

At the petrol pump, the diesel side is topped up constantly.

The AdBlue side is filled far less regularly, usually from a bottle, and normally by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

Mistakes happen in the gap between the two.

## Weston: how AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs

Carelessness rarely causes it. Instead is three things coming up at once.

On a driveway off Weston Crescent before work, or in the car park at The Round House heading home: that is where the hurried top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low the vehicle warns you, and once it is empty, limp mode follows.

Then, the hand goes for the cap it knew on the old car — because a hire car, a new motor or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

Nothing stops the pour after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

It's a few seconds, be it in Rocksavage or right in the centre of Weston.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Westfield or a forecourt in Weston, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Check the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are regularly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones normally aren't.

- The size. On plenty of cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Open the flap and look for a label — many cars mark which belongs in each inlet just there.

- Can't find it next to the diesel filler? In that case check below the bonnet or inside the boot — the owner's manual will say which.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside Runcorn, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Cheshire that is.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Heath Road South.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, perhaps, yet it works.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Before starting the car, close the cap and check a second time that your diesel cap never opened off.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side.

Stage five is off limits.

## Weston: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your engine.

On plenty of diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch it on.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is sucked from.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it's the North West Fuels or the BP, ask the attendants to help roll the vehicle away from the pump.

If you're on your own drive in Weston, leave the vehicle where it sits.

When the engine has run already, stop somewhere safe then switch it off.

Leave the M56 — under 3 miles out of Weston — at the first junction.

About how far did it go? Hopping across Weston is smaller a job than a run of under 15 miles towards Chester, so say.

## Our arrival in Weston, and what occurs next

Wherever the car has stopped, whether outside Weston Primary School, beside Weston Cross or on your own drive, the van comes to it.

Those answers settle the work and our price, and so we ask what went in, about how much, and whether it has run.

On the call itself, you are told our price — before anything else.

Draining the tank comes next, followed by a full flush of your system.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and none of that washes away unaided. That is why it matters more.

After your filter is flushed — or replaced, where required — clean diesel is added, and then your vehicle gets tested.

Next we fire it up and check it runs correctly before we go.

Unstarted vehicles usually need a half-hour visit from the moment we arrive. The equipment is safe on a live forecourt, and quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

The insurer usually wants an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours at the end. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront.

It is worth looking at your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.

## About Weston and where it is

Weston is a suburban area in Cheshire, situated near the coast and approximately 11 miles from Chester. Weston has a relatively low elevation of 78 metres and is part of a larger residential area that includes nearby Rocksavage and Weston Point. Weston is characterized by its semi-detached housing stock, which is typical of many suburban areas in the North West of England. Weston is also close to other nearby places such as Heath.

## AdBlue drains around Weston, and Cheshire beyond

Weston is a residential suburb, and our vans that cover it also work the towns near it, Weston Point and Heath among them, across the WA postcode area.

Fastest of all: give a WA7 4 postcode for the van.

Your car doesn't need to shift.

We drain it where it is — a side street near St John's, a lay-by on the way to Heath Park, a drive.

If you are close to a border, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of Stone Carving, ring and ask rather than guessing.

## The short version for Weston drivers

Before you tip, read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank regardless, leave the vehicle off and phone 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel drains it where it stands, anywhere around Cheshire.
