# Weston: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, your ignition stays off and so does your motor.

Water with urea dissolved in it: that's AdBlue.

Unlike fuel, it neither burns nor blends, and nothing starts until the motor sucks it through.

Caught before your engine has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Weston.

Phone 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## Weston, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do at once

Do:

- Remove the keys, which prevents anyone switching the electrics on.

- If you are at all close to moving traffic, put the hazard lights on.

- So you can tell us which liquid it was and about how much, keep the till receipt or the empty bottle.

- Call right where you are. Say a SG4 7 postcode or the closest street sign, and nobody has to search for you.

Don't:

- Shifting the car just a short way is no reason to fire up your engine.

- Your ignition stays off: on lots of diesels, turning it on is enough to run your pump.

- Don't top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.

- Never drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short stretch down Fore Street.

- Emptying your tank on your own beside the road isn't one to try.

Moving your vehicle off the island is a job for staff to help with, whichever Weston forecourt you are on, the Tesco Extra included.

On the drive, the car stays exactly where it is.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not your motor.

From a separate tank it is fed directly to your exhaust, treating what your motor lets out.

A fuel pump isn't made to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

It doesn't blend. Once it is poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts nothing like fuel.

The pickup sucks fuel from the lowest part of that tank, and that's exactly where AdBlue ends up: as it is heavier than diesel, it sinks.

A car topped up on a drive in Warrens Green overnight and left unstarted is the simple one. Nothing has sucked the AdBlue up so far — but once your engine runs, that's what is pulled first, directly from the bottom of your tank.

From there it causes two kinds of damage.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps running on the components it hits for as long as it stays there.

Pipes carrying AdBlue spell damage overnight for a car sitting around Weston. Just in your tank, it stays the same.

And there's the water: it offers no protection to the parts that need it the most — the injection pump and every injector.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel frequently the bigger problem?

A problem of thin fuel is what you end up with from fuelling a diesel with petrol from the Esso.

It mixes with the diesel, and whilst it is inside that tank it does no damage; the damage comes from running the motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different problem: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all.

Because it doesn't burn, running it through is not an option.

Nor can it be watered down, since it splits again — and the following tankful won't clear away deposits or corrosion. So the flush counts more with AdBlue, and trying the engine "to see", in the centre of Weston or out in Hickmans Hill, does more harm than nearly any other slip.

As with petrol, there is good news.

Anywhere across Hertfordshire the vehicle has stopped, an unrun engine leaves the AdBlue still inside the reservoir: the simplest part of any fuel system to empty.

## Weston: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many vehicles sits right next to your diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

A container picked up when driving home and poured in at home, instead of at the filling station, is the usual story.

A few familiar ways cover most cases.

Rushing, outside Weston Primary & Nursery School, after a warning light flashed on during the school run, a parent tops up your car.

Close to Post Office Row, a driver pours a bottle in on that drive after work.

Or a driver unfamiliar with that flap refills the car after dark, parked in the car park outside The Cricketers.

It takes place most in the vehicles people know least: a hire car, a new vehicle, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Anywhere in Hertfordshire, Weston included, the mistake does not change, and nor does the first response: leave it off.

## Weston: started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer in your tank.

Through the fuel filter, through the pipework, and — with any running — into the injection pump and every injector: that's how far it has gone.

Perhaps returning from Top Plantation, or part way across Weston, the engine may go lumpy, smoke, lose power, light up your dash or cut out.

Once you safely can, pull over then turn it off — with no turning it on again to see.

With each start, more of that is pulled through.

Weston lies under 3 miles from the A1(M); if you were on it, exit by the next junction and stop safely instead of driving on.

Distance matters: each mile carries the AdBlue further in, and so heading towards St Albans, under 25 miles away, gives a much bigger job than crossing Weston to the car park by Weston Village Hall.

Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

Wherever your car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to flush once your engine has been started.

Caught soon, it very rarely leaves lasting damage.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Weston?

Anywhere it has stopped around Weston — a forecourt, a layby, a drive, a street beside Holy Trinity Weston — our van comes to the car.

The job rests on three replies, and we ask for before all else — what went in, the quantity, and whether the engine has run.

Right there, the tank is then drained, and all of the contaminated diesel and the urea leave at once.

With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, flushing matters: the fuel system is flushed right through since residue will not flush away by itself.

Next, the filter: cleaned, or replaced if it must be. After that clean diesel, and then a test of your vehicle.

Most of these jobs are a half-hour job once our technicians get there, if the motor has not run.

Explosion-proof pumps mean a live forecourt sensible to work on, and they run quiet enough to spare the neighbours at night.

New diesel goes in to prime your system, and that's the final step.

At that point we fire it up and you set off, whether from a parking bay at Baldock or a drive around Weston.

Our technicians check it runs properly on clean diesel before we go.

No workshop is required at any stage, with the entire job done then and there.

Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come at the end.

## About Weston and where it is

Weston is a small village in Hertfordshire, situated inland at an elevation of around 150 metres. Weston lies approximately 31 miles north of London and 15.8 miles northwest of St Albans, near the settlements of Damask Green, Green End, and Church End. Weston has a population of around 881 residents and is characterised by predominantly detached housing.

## AdBlue drains across Weston and Hertfordshire

Throughout the SG postcode area, the teams answering AdBlue call-outs in Weston serve most of Hertfordshire too, Damask Green, Green End and Church End included.

Near a border, or somewhere awkward to explain? Checking beats assuming, so phone.

No towing is needed. In Weston, a rural village, a van that comes to you fits: the car is drained on the spot, whether on a drive, a residential street, a parking area or a filling station.

## Weston: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Every job differs, and so not one single quote would be honest.

Whether the motor has been running, and for how long, comes first in what changes the cost. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the position of the vehicle, because an open driveway is simpler for a van to reach safely than a tight space behind Clothall Village Hall.

That's why each call from Weston starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what went in, how much, and if it's run.

Once they are known, a range becomes a single firm number.

Our price is quoted during the call, before anyone sets off; payment happens on the day, by card or over the phone, and nothing upfront.

Look at your policy whilst we are on the way: many include misfuelling cover.

## Weston: still next to the vehicle?

Then the most handy thing you can do is nothing to the car.

Ignition off, engine off, keys out.

Petrol in Diesel takes over the remainder, in Weston or anywhere in Hertfordshire, after you ring 0333 366 0103 to say it's AdBlue, roughly what quantity, and whether the engine ran.
