# How It Happens and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Weston

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and the ignition off then call 0333 366 0103.

Usually, if your engine hasn't turned, it's drained and thoroughly rinsed where your vehicle sits in Weston.

Nothing happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page explains the why it occurs and the ways to prevent it for good.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Not one fluid but two: that is what plenty of modern diesels near Weston and Salt run, with diesel feeding your engine.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler.

Some motors keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot more place the two side by side behind one flap.

Diesel gets filled at every filling station visit, again and again.

Much less often, the AdBlue side gets topped up — normally from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

It is in that gap that the mistake lives.

## Weston: how AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

On a drive off Old Road before work, or in the car park at Woolpack on the way home: that's where the hurried top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it is empty, limp mode kicks in.

Then, the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old vehicle — since a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't.

Lastly, the spout goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in just as easily, and after the pour begins, nothing halts it.

Gayton or the middle of Weston: it takes the same few seconds either way.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Ingestre or a forecourt around Weston, check these. They take a few seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally isn't. Read it instead of going by position.

- On plenty of motors, size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- A label inside your fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of cars. Check for it.

- The handbook. If your filler is not by the diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Stafford.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Staffordshire that is.

- Stop on level, motor off, with time to spare — not rushing on the side of Stafford Road.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.

- Both under a single flap? So make sure the cap on your diesel side is still closed ahead of raising the bottle.

- Stop when the tank fills or the bottle is empty; until then, tip gently through its built-in spout.

- Only after that, start the vehicle: close the cap, check again, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Find during the second or third step that AdBlue went in the wrong filler? That is where you stop.

Skip step five altogether.

## Weston: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Short list, then. Top of it: your engine remains unstarted.

Do not switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Topping up with diesel won't dilute it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the base of your tank, right where the fuel is drawn from.

The staff at Shell, Esso or any forecourt will usually lend a hand to push the car clear when you ask.

If you are on your own drive in Weston, leave it where it stands.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

Leave the M6 — under 5 miles out of Weston — at the next junction.

A short hop across Weston is a smaller job than a run towards Stoke-on-Trent, under 15 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Our arrival in Weston, and what occurs next

By St Andrew's CofE Primary School, close to St Andrew's Church, Weston or on your own drive: wherever the car has stopped, our technicians come to it.

We ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether it has run, because those replies decide the work and the quote.

No one sets off until you have had the price by phone.

The system is then cleaned thoroughly, after your tank is cleared.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own.

Filter flushed or, if needed, swapped; clean diesel in; and then a check of the vehicle.

Next our technicians start it and confirm it runs correctly before leaving.

Unrun cars usually mean a half-hour visit after the moment we arrive. The equipment is safe on a busy forecourt, and quiet enough for a driveway after dark.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents your insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Before we get there, have a look at your insurance documents; many carry cover for misfuelling.

The vehicle remains put.

A driveway, a lay-by on the way to The Green, a side street close to Weston Village Hall: our engineers drain the vehicle where it sits.

Tricky to explain, like the back of St Peter? Close to a county line? Asking beats guessing, and so phone.

## In short, for Weston drivers

Tip no AdBlue till you have read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank anyway, leave the vehicle off then ring 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel drains it where it stands, anywhere in Staffordshire.
