# Westquarter: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then put this page down for now, keep the ignition and motor off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a full flush, done right where the vehicle sits around Westquarter, is normally what it needs if found before the engine runs.

Reading before the event? In that case what follows covers why it happens and what to stop it happening at all.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Plenty of modern diesels around Reddingmuirhead, as well as Westquarter, carry on two fluids; your engine gets just your diesel.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust stream to clean it.

Each tank comes with one filler of its own.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Topping up your diesel side at the pump happens all the time.

Rarely filled, AdBlue usually goes in out of a bottle, tipped by a driver who must stop and think which cap to use.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank take place in Westquarter?

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

On a driveway off Oakbank before work, or in the car park outside Birrell's Bar on the way home: that's where the hurried top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low the car tells you, and if it's empty, limp mode follows.

Next, the hand goes for the cap it knew on the old vehicle — since a rental car, a new motor or a company car places the fillers where your last one did not.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

Beancross or the middle of Westquarter: it takes the same few seconds either way.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in Parkhill or a forecourt in Westquarter, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Where it sits can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones are often blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones usually don't.

- The size. On many motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If the filler is not by your diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Polmont? Check with the person who drove the vehicle last before you set off, not once the light goes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Falkirk that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of Elm Drive, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park and switch off properly.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, yes, yet it works.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Skip stage five altogether.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Westquarter already?

Do not start the engine: that is where the short order of things begins.

The fuel pump starts on many diesels the moment the ignition is switched on — and so leave it off.

Topping up with diesel won't weaken it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of the tank, right where fuel is drawn from.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it is the Esso or the Thames, ask the attendants to help roll the vehicle away from the petrol pump.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway around Westquarter.

If the engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

The next exit means the place to leave when you are on the M9, under a mile from Westquarter.

Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Westquarter is smaller work than a trip of under 15 miles towards Stirling, and so say.

## When our engineers turn up around Westquarter, what happens?

Outside the local primary school, near Westquarter Community Project or on your own driveway: wherever the car has stopped, we come to it.

Which liquid went in, the quantity, and whether it ran: we ask since those answers set both work and price.

No one sets off until you've heard our quote by phone.

Next: a drain, then a full flush of the entire system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more here than with petrol.

The filter cleaned or, where needed, replaced; fresh diesel in; and then a check of your vehicle.

Then our engineers start the engine and make sure it runs properly before we leave.

Using pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where your motor hasn't run take about half an hour after our engineers arrive.

Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents an insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

Anywhere it stands — beside Laurieston Scout Hall, on a lay-by heading to Westquarter Community Backyard, at home — that's where it is emptied.

Awkward to explain, like the back of Redding Mining Disaster Memorial? By a border? Checking is better than assuming, so phone.

Tip no AdBlue until you've read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank regardless, leave the vehicle off and phone 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel clears it where it stands, anywhere around Falkirk.
