# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Westy: Why It Occurs and How to Prevent It

Stop reading a minute when the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and call 0333 366 0103.

Normally, if your motor has not turned, it is drained and thoroughly cleaned where the car is around Westy.

Reading in advance? Then what follows explains why it comes about and what to prevent it happening at all.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Not one fluid but two: that is what plenty of newer diesels near Westy and Paddington carry, with diesel feeding your engine.

The exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue ends up: dosed into the gas to fresh them, from its own tank.

Each tank has its own filler.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the arrangement on a lot of motors. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in the boot instead.

At the petrol pump, the diesel side is topped up all the time.

Far less commonly, the AdBlue side gets filled — normally from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

The mistake grows in that gap between the two.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place in Westy

Carelessness seldom explains it. Instead is three things lining up at once.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out completely, the vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Richmond Avenue before work, or in the car park outside The Cheshire Cheese on the way home.

The old car's filler is where your hand goes — yet a rental car, a new car or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That is the second factor: a strange motor.

Third, the spout fits: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in as easily, and after the pour begins, no part halts it.

Latchford or the heart of Westy: it takes the same few seconds either way.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Be it a Westy forecourt or a drive out in Howley, take a couple of seconds on these before any is poured in.

- Where it sits can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones are often blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally do not.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of motors, the AdBlue one.

- Lift the filler flap and look for a label — plenty of vehicles mark what goes in each filler right there.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler is if it is not by your diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park outside Padgate, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

When the light goes on, wherever around Cheshire, use this routine.

- Pull in on level, motor off, with time to spare — never rushing on the side of Whitley Avenue.

- Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — after you have found your filler and read it.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the car on.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Before you start the car, shut the cap and look a second time that your diesel cap was never came off.

Spot at stage two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? Then stop right there.

Do not go on to step five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Westy?

Do not start the motor: that is how the short order of things starts.

Do not switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Diluting it with extra diesel won't work, because AdBlue sinks to the base rather than mixing — and that's where the fuel is pulled from.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it is the Esso or the EG On the Move, ask the attendants to help roll the vehicle clear of the petrol pump.

Your own driveway around Westy is the place it should stay.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

On the Woolston Interchange, under 3 miles from Westy, that means the next junction.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Salford, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Westy.

## What happens when our engineers turn up around Westy

We come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside St Augustine's Catholic Primary School, near Westy Community Centre or on your own drive.

Which liquid went in, the amount, and if it ran: our technicians ask since the replies decide both work and price.

That price is given over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

Next: a drain, then a thorough flush of the whole system.

More than with petrol, it matters here: crystals build up, some metals corrode, and none of that washes out unaided, no matter how long it sits.

Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

Before we leave, our technicians fire it up and make sure that it's running properly.

If your engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Nothing upfront; you settle up that day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

## AdBlue drains in Westy and across Cheshire

Being a residential suburb, Westy shares its vans surrounding areas — Bruche, Grappenhall — all the way across WA postcodes and the surrounding area beyond.

The van gets to you fastest with a postcode starting WA4 1.

Your car stays put.

Our technicians drain it where it is — a side street close to Latchford's Community Hub, a lay-by on the way to Westy Park, a driveway.

Awkward to pin down, like the back of Latchford Methodist Church? By a border? Asking beats assuming, so ring.
