# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Whaddon? Don't Start It

Motor off, ignition off: that is where you begin if AdBlue has got into your diesel tank.

Urea mixed in water is what AdBlue is.

It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does begins when the fuel system draws it in.

If your engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally drained and carefully cleaned where the car sits in Whaddon.

Before anything, call us on 0333 366 0103.

## Whaddon, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do at once

Do these:

- So nobody can turn the ignition on, pull your keys away.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all close.

- Which fluid, and about what amount? Hang on to the bottle or your receipt, and we will see.

- Ring just where you are. Say a MK17 0 postcode or the nearest street sign, and no one has to search for you.

Do not do these:

- Don't start your motor, even for a moment to move the car.

- Turning your key to ignition alone sets your pump running on plenty of diesels. Avoid it.

- Don't top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel; it separates out.

- Even a short distance along High Street is too far to drive the car.

- Do not try to drain the car yourself by the kerbside.

Moving your vehicle off the pumps is a job for attendants to help with, whichever Whaddon forecourt you are on, the Morrisons included.

At your own drive, don't touch it at all.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not the engine.

Its own reservoir holds it, and from there it's sprayed into your exhaust, and there it treats the fumes.

Not one side fits the other: urea doesn't belong in a pump, and a pump cannot take urea.

Tipped in with the diesel, it stays apart instead of mixing — quite different from fuel.

The intake sucks fuel from the deepest part of the tank, and that is just where AdBlue ends up: being denser than diesel, it sinks.

Once the system runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to go through. Until then it waits underneath your diesel, which is why a car topped up in Woodhill yesterday and not started stays the straightforward one, provided nobody touches your key.

Two kinds of harm follow from there.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps working on the components it hits for as long as it stays there.

Where the AdBlue has reached the pipework, waiting overnight in Whaddon leaves it worse. Inside that tank alone, waiting costs nothing.

Then there is the water: it brings no protection to the parts that rely on it the most — the injection pump and every injector.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is frequently worse

A problem of thin fuel is what you end up with after fuelling a diesel with petrol at the BP.

Harm just comes from running on it. Blended into the diesel and sitting in that tank, it causes nothing.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely unsuitable substance.

It cannot simply be run through, because it does not burn.

It doesn't stay mixed, so it cannot be weakened. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your motor "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in Westcroft or the middle of Whaddon.

With AdBlue, the good news is no separate from petrol.

Emptying a tank is the simplest job on any fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue stays in there — anywhere across Buckinghamshire your vehicle sits.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Whaddon?

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many vehicles sits right next to your diesel filler, occasionally under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

Most of the time it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the pump.

It tends to take place in a few familiar ways.

Rushing, outside Whaddon CofE School, after a warning light came on during the school run, someone tops up the vehicle.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Nash Road.

Or the car is topped up in the car park outside New Lowndes Arms, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.

It occurs most in the motors drivers know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

An identical mistake, an identical first step — keep it switched off — wherever you are in Whaddon or the remainder of Buckinghamshire.

## Already started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Whaddon?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer in your tank.

It has been pulled through the filter and your lines, and if your engine ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure pump and your injectors.

Lumpy running, smoke, lost power, dashboard lights or cutting out: each may show up, maybe part way across Whaddon or coming back from Briary Plantation.

Stop when safe. Turn off. Keep the car off instead of restarting it to check.

With each start, more of it is pulled through.

Exit the M1, under 10 miles from Whaddon, by the first junction and stop somewhere safe, not carrying on.

Every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper into your system. That is why crossing Whaddon to park near Jubilee Hall and a drive of under 5 miles towards Milton Keynes are very separate jobs.

Tell us about how far it had come.

There's more to clean out once the motor has been started, and our engineers do all of it where the vehicle has stopped.

Caught soon, it very seldom leaves long-term damage.

## Whaddon: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

Wherever it has come to rest in Whaddon — a filling station, a lay-by, a drive, a road by St Mary — the van comes to the car.

Three replies shape the work, so first we ask what went in, about what quantity, plus whether your motor has turned over.

Right there, your tank is then emptied, and both the contaminated diesel and the urea leave as one.

Residue from AdBlue won't wash away unaided, so the fuel system gets a careful flush, which matters much more here than with petrol.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

If the engine has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once our engineers are there.

Quiet enough to use outside a house at night, and fine on a working forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

New diesel goes in to prime the fuel system, and that is the final step.

Firing it up comes next, and then you head off from where the vehicle is parked, at Milton Keynes Central or on a drive around Whaddon.

Before leaving, our technicians confirm it's running smoothly with fresh diesel in.

As the job is done in full where your car is, a garage never comes into it.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report after that, which is what insurers ask for.

## About Whaddon itself

Whaddon is a small village in Buckinghamshire, situated approximately 4 miles from Milton Keynes and 45 miles northwest of London. Whaddon sits in a rural area at an elevation of around 134 metres, surrounded by other residential areas such as Kingsmead, Oxley Park, and Tattenhoe Park. Whaddon has a population of around 520 people and is characterised by predominantly detached housing.

## AdBlue drains across Whaddon and Buckinghamshire

Kingsmead, Oxley Park and Tattenhoe Park are among the places near Whaddon that the same vans serve, along with much of Buckinghamshire beyond, throughout the MK postcode area.

Close to a boundary, or anywhere tricky to explain? Checking is better than guessing, and so ring.

Anywhere your vehicle sits — your drive at home, a residential street, a parking area, a filling station — our technicians empty it there, with no need to bring it to us; which suits Whaddon, a rural village, well.

## Whaddon: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Each job differs, so no fixed price is fair.

Whether the motor has been running, and for how long, comes first in what changes the cost. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the position of the vehicle, because an open driveway is simpler for our van to get to safely than a tight gap behind Snelshall Priory.

Before a quote, not after, every call from Whaddon begins with three checks: the liquid, the quantity, plus whether the engine ran.

Those replies turn a range into a straight quote.

Before anyone heads out, you hear the quote on the phone. And you pay on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

While the van is travelling, check your policy: many include misfuelling.

## Beside the vehicle around Whaddon, still?

Then the most handy thing you can do is nothing to the vehicle.

Keys out; engine and ignition off.

Phone 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, roughly how much, and if it ran are everything our technicians ask. Petrol in Diesel takes over the rest across Buckinghamshire, Whaddon too.
