# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Wheatley: Why It Occurs and How to Prevent It

Pause here for a moment when the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

Usually, if the motor hasn't run, it is drained and thoroughly rinsed where your vehicle sits around Wheatley.

Here before the event? In that case the rest covers how it comes about and what to prevent it happening at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Plenty of newer diesels around Belle Vue, as well as Wheatley, carry on two liquids; the engine takes only your diesel.

The exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the gas to clean them, from its own tank.

Each tank has its own filler.

Many of motors have a single flap for the two, while some put the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

At the petrol pump, your diesel side gets filled all the time.

A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes usually tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less regularly.

It's in that gap that the slip lives.

## Wheatley: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the car goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Old School Way before work, or in the car park outside Cumberland on the way home.

The old car's cap is where your hand reaches — yet a hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That's a second thing: a new motor.

A spout-topped bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, once started, keeps on.

It's seconds, whether in Wheatley Park or right in the centre of Wheatley.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Wheatley Hills or a forecourt around Wheatley, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Read the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue caps are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones usually are not.

- Plenty of motors fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- A label inside the fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on many motors. Check for it.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by your diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The previous driver knows. Ask as you pick up a rental or fleet car — at Doncaster's car park, say — not once the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

When the light comes on, anywhere around South Yorkshire, follow this routine.

- Turn off after you park — flat ground, motor off, and never rushed beside Morley Road on the verge.

- Daft as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew the cap works — after you have located the filler and read the cap.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the vehicle on.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start the vehicle: close the cap, check once more, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Find at the second or third step that AdBlue went into the diesel tank? That is where you stop.

Never carry on to step five.

## Wheatley: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Brief list, then. Top of it: your motor remains unstarted.

Leave your ignition off too, because on plenty of diesels it alone starts your fuel pump.

Diluting it with more diesel fails, because AdBlue sinks to the bottom rather than blending — and that's where your fuel is pulled from.

On a forecourt — Applegreen, Esso or any other — the attendants will usually help push your car away, if you ask.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway around Wheatley.

Already started? Stop when it's sensible, then turn off.

Wheatley lies under 3 miles from the A1(M); on it, take the next junction.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Doncaster, under a mile away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Wheatley.

## When our technicians arrive in Wheatley, what occurs?

Our van reaches your car anywhere it has come to rest — your own driveway, beside St Mary, or outside Town Field Primary School.

Our engineers ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether it's run, because the answers determine this work and the price.

During the call itself, you hear the price — ahead of anything else.

Then your tank is emptied and the system cleaned thoroughly.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

Before we go, our engineers start the car and check that it is running smoothly.

Unstarted cars usually mean a half-hour visit after the moment we arrive. The equipment is safe on a busy filling station, and hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

While we travel, take a look at your insurance documents; many include cover for misfuelling.

Shifting the car is not necessary.

A drive, a lay-by on the way to Town Fields, a side street near St Paul: our technicians drain it where it stands.

Guessing won't help at the back of Christ Church, on a boundary, or somewhere hard to pin down; phone and ask.

## Wheatley drivers: the short version

Tip no AdBlue until you have read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel drains it on the spot, anywhere across South Yorkshire, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank regardless — so leave the car off and phone 0333 366 0103.
