# How It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Wheldrake

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and your ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your engine runs, it's generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Wheldrake.

Not happened yet? Further down, the page covers the why it occurs and the how to avoid it for good.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

No single fluid but two: that's what many newer diesels around Wheldrake and Elvington carry, with diesel feeding your engine.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, where spraying cleans the gas.

Each tank comes with a filler of its own.

Some cars keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty more place the two side by side under one flap.

Diesel gets filled on every forecourt call-out, week in, week out.

The AdBlue side is filled far less regularly, usually from a bottle, and normally by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

The mistake grows in that gap between the two.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs in Wheldrake

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

Hurry comes from the warning. The vehicle tells you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a driveway off Church Lane, or on the way home in the car park at Wenlock Arms.

The old car's cap is where the hand reaches — yet a rental car, a new car or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That is the second thing: a strange motor.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

Storwood or the heart of Wheldrake: it takes the same few seconds in both.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Look at these first, on a forecourt in Wheldrake or a drive over in East Cottingwith. Seconds, that's all.

- Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Trust the cap, not where it sits.

- The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many cars say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by the diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside York.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across North Yorkshire that is.

- Stop on level, motor off, with time to spare — never hurried on the side of Dalton Hill.

- Daft as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you have located the filler and read the cap.

- The diesel cap stays on. Where both sit under a flap, confirm it's shut before lifting the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Stage five stays out.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Wheldrake already?

Short list, then. First: the motor remains off.

The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels the moment your ignition goes on — so leave it off.

Diluting it with more diesel won't work, since AdBlue settles to the bottom instead of blending — and that is where the fuel is pulled from.

Ask the attendants to help push the car away from the petrol pump if you are at a forecourt — the Shell, the Esso or anywhere else.

If you're on your own drive in Wheldrake, leave the car where it is.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if the engine has already run.

On the M62, under 15 miles from Wheldrake, that means the next exit.

Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Wheldrake is smaller work than a trip of under 10 miles to York, so say.

## Wheldrake: what takes place when our engineers get there

Anywhere your car has stopped, be it by Wheldrake with Thorganby Church of England Primary School, beside St Helens or at home, the van travels to it.

Which fluid got in, the amount, and whether it ran: our engineers ask because the answers decide the work and quote.

You get that quote by phone, before anyone sets off.

Draining that tank comes next, then a thorough flush of the fuel system.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and neither washes out by itself. That is why it counts more.

Once the fuel filter has been flushed — or replaced, where needed — clean diesel is added, and then your car gets tested.

The engine is fired up next and checked to be sure it runs smoothly, all before our technicians go.

If your motor hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

The insurer will ask for the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both once the job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.

A postcode starting YO19 6 gets our van to you fastest.

The vehicle remains where it is.

Anywhere it stands — near Wheldrake Village Hall, on a lay-by en route to The Belt, at home — that is where it gets emptied.

Ring and ask instead of assuming if you are close to a border, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of Holy Trinity.

## For Wheldrake motorists, the short version

Pour no AdBlue until you have read the cap.
