# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Whelston? Keep It Switched Off

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then keep the engine off — and your ignition too.

Chemically, AdBlue is just urea in water.

Not like fuel, it neither burns nor mixes, and nothing starts till your engine pulls it through.

Caught before your motor has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Whelston.

Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

## Whelston, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do at once

Do these:

- Keys out — that way nobody can power anything on.

- If you are at all near moving traffic, put the hazards on.

- Keep your receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what was put in and roughly how much.

- Tell us a postcode starting CH6 6, or whatever street is nearest, and our van finds you straight — so call from wherever you stand.

Do not do these:

- Do not start the engine, even for a moment to move your car.

- The ignition stays off: on lots of diesels, turning it on is enough to start your fuel pump.

- AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding more fuel won't weaken it.

- Any driving at all is best avoided, even a short stretch up Cae'r Ffynnon.

- Beside the road, do not attempt draining it on your own.

Moving the car off the pumps is a job for staff to help with, whichever Whelston forecourt you're on, the the nearest petrol station included.

At your own drive, do not touch it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

The engine isn't what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is.

Kept in a dedicated tank, it is injected into the exhaust stream to clean the gases.

Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is designed to handle it.

It does not combine. Once it's tipped into the tank, AdBlue acts nothing like fuel.

Heavier than diesel, it sinks and collects below it — the very place the pickup sucks from.

A vehicle topped up on a driveway in Pen-y-maes yesterday evening and left unstarted is the simple one. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up so far — but when the engine turns, that is what goes first, straight from the bottom of your tank.

It causes two kinds of damage from there.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that crystallises in filters and tiny channels; meanwhile, since it eats at some metals, every part it reaches suffers for as long as it stays in there.

A motor left sitting in Whelston with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank isn't.

Diesel lubricates the injection pump and every injector as it passes; water offers no lubrication, and that is a separate kind of harm.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel commonly the bigger fault?

Put petrol in a diesel at the Shell and you have a fault of thin fuel.

No damage is done as long as it sits unused, mixed into your diesel — only once the engine runs on it.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally unsuitable liquid.

It cannot just be run through, because it doesn't burn.

Whether the vehicle is in Bagillt or the centre of Whelston, turning it over "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other error, and the flush counts more. The reasons: it won't remain mixed, and so diluting it is impossible; and crystals and corrosion survive the next tankful.

The same good news applies as with petrol.

Not run? Then the AdBlue waits just in your tank, the simplest bit of the whole system to empty, wherever the vehicle has stopped around Flintshire.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Whelston: how it ends up there

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many motors waits right next to your diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

It mostly takes place outside the house, from a bottle grabbed en route home, rather than at the filling station.

Mostly, it takes place in one of a few familiar ways.

Rushing, outside Parkgate Primary School, after a warning light flashed on during the school run, a parent refills the car.

A driver tips the container in at home, right off Tyn Twll Lane, as the day ends.

One more pattern: dim light, the car park outside Boot and Ship, and someone opening that flap for the first time.

It occurs most in the vehicles people know least: a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Wherever you are around Whelston or the remainder of Flintshire, it's the same mistake and the same first answer: leave it off.

## Already started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Whelston?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

Via the filter, through the lines, and — given any running time — into the injection pump and each injector: that is how far it travels.

Maybe coming back from Chip Wood, or part way across Whelston, the motor might run rough, smoke, lose power, light up your dash or cut out.

No starting it again to check: pull over once safe, then turn everything off.

Each start pulls more of that through.

Exit the M53, under 10 miles from Whelston, at the next junction and park somewhere safe, rather than driving on.

Mileage matters: each mile carries the AdBlue further in, so heading towards St Asaph, under 15 miles away, makes a much larger job than crossing Whelston to the car park by Garreg Ateb.

Tell us about how far it had come.

Wherever your car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to clean out once the motor has been started.

Noticed early, it very rarely leaves lasting damage.

## Whelston: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

Anywhere it has stopped around Whelston — a filling station, a lay-by, a driveway, a street by Bagillt Jubilee Beacon — the van travels to the car.

The work rests on three replies, which we ask for before all else — what got in, the quantity, and whether the engine has turned over.

Then that tank is emptied where the car waits, and so the contaminated fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

A full flush counts much more after AdBlue than after petrol, because what remains won't wash away by itself.

Next, your filter: flushed, or changed when it has to be. After that fresh diesel, and then a check of your vehicle.

The majority of these jobs are a half-hour visit once we arrive, if the engine hasn't run.

The pumping gear is explosion-proof, so a busy forecourt is no problem, and it is hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

Fresh diesel goes in to bleed your system, and that is the last step.

At that point we start it and you set off, whether from a parking space at Flint or a drive in Whelston.

We check it runs correctly on new diesel before leaving.

The whole job is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage.

At the end, you are given paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice plus a written report from the engineer.

## About Whelston itself

Whelston is a small village in Flintshire, situated on the north-east coast of Wales at an elevation of 22 metres. Whelston lies near the cities of St Asaph and the seaside resorts of New Brighton, and is characterized by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock. Whelston is home to a population of around 1297 people, who live in a community that is close to the Welsh coast and its associated amenities.

## AdBlue drains across Whelston and Flintshire

New Brighton, Walwen and Pentre-bach are among the places near Whelston that the same teams reach, along with most of Flintshire beyond, over the CH postcode area.

Guessing won't help close to a border or somewhere hard to pin down; phone and check.

Whelston is a coastal village, and an on-site drain suits it: whether the car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our technicians drain it where it sits, so it never needs to be moved to us.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Whelston

Since each callouts differ, a single price wouldn't be fair.

Three things move the cost: whether your engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where the vehicle is. That last one comes down to whether a technician can reach it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight space behind Bagillt Colliery.

That's why every call from Whelston starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and if it has run.

Their replies shrink the range right down to one figure.

You hear that quote by phone, before anyone sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

As the van is travelling, dig out your insurance: many include misfuelling.

## In Whelston and still beside your car?

Then, touch nothing — that is the best move available.

Keys out, engine off, ignition off.

Call 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, the amount, plus if it ran are all our engineers need. Petrol in Diesel takes over the remainder across Flintshire, Whelston too.
