# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Whimple? Don't Start It

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then keep your motor off — and the ignition as well.

Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue.

It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does starts when your fuel system draws it in.

Caught before the motor has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Whimple.

Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank in Whimple

To do:

- So nobody can turn your ignition on, pull the keys out.

- Put the hazard lights on if you're at all near moving traffic.

- Which fluid, and roughly what amount? Hang on to the bottle or the till receipt, and our technicians can see.

- Ring right where you are. Quote a EX5 2 postcode or the nearest street name, and nobody has to hunt for you.

Not to do:

- Not even briefly, and not to shift your car: the engine remains off.

- Your ignition stays off: on lots of diesels, turning it on is enough to run your pump.

- Pouring in extra diesel does not work: AdBlue separates out rather than thinning.

- Do not drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short stretch up Church Road.

- No emptying it yourself, at all, on the verge.

Ask the people behind the counter to help you roll your car away from the pumps if you're on a forecourt in Whimple, whether it's the Texaco or somewhere else.

At your own drive, do not touch it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Meant for the exhaust, AdBlue has no place in your engine.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it.

Not one side fits the other: urea doesn't belong in a pump, and an injection pump can't deal with urea.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, once poured in, will not. The behaviour is nothing like fuel's.

It is heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and collects at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from.

A motor filled on a drive in Larkbeare yesterday evening and not started since counts as the simple case. No pump has sucked the AdBlue up so far — but when your motor turns, that's what is pulled first, directly from the bottom of the tank.

Two kinds of damage follow from there.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that hardens in filters and narrow channels; meanwhile, because it eats at certain metals, each part it reaches keeps suffering for as long as it remains inside.

If the AdBlue is in the pipework, waiting till morning in Whimple leaves things worse. Inside the tank alone, waiting costs nothing.

Water protects nothing. The injection pump and each injector need diesel running through them, so the water part harms them by itself.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it's regularly worse than petrol

Fill a diesel with petrol in error over at the Murco, and this problem is thinned fuel.

Blended into the diesel and sitting still, it's harmless for now; using the motor is the harm.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid as such is simply the wrong one.

Not burning, it can't just be run through.

Crystals and corrosion stay after the following tankful, and AdBlue separates back from the diesel, so watering it won't help. Hence the flush counts more, and trying the engine "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than almost any other slip — in Allercombe or the centre of Whimple equally.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Wherever in Devon your vehicle has stopped, an unstarted motor means the AdBlue yet in the reservoir: the simplest bit of a fuel system to empty.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Whimple?

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of motors rests right next to the diesel filler, occasionally under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

A bottle picked up while heading home and tipped in outside the house, instead of at the forecourt, is the usual route.

The ways it occurs are few and familiar.

Hurrying, outside Whimple Primary School, after a warning light flashed on during the school run, a parent refills the car.

Near Henry Lewis Close, a driver tips a container in at home in the evening.

One more pattern: dim light, the car park outside New Fountain, and someone using that flap the first time.

It crops up the most in a rental, a brand-new car, a fleet motor, or the other motor in a family with one of each fuel types — the cars drivers use least.

Wherever you're in Whimple or the remainder of Devon, it is the same slip and the same first answer: leave the car off.

## Started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Whimple?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

With any running, it goes on to the high-pressure pump and every injector, having passed through the fuel filter and lines.

Maybe returning from Dince Hill, or midway across Whimple, the engine may run rough, smoke, drop pace, light up your dash or cut out.

When you safely can, pull over then switch it off — without restarting to test.

Each start pulls more of it through.

If you were on the M5, under 5 miles from Whimple, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere safe instead of pressing on.

Every mile carries the AdBlue deeper into the system. That is why a hop across Whimple to park beside St Mary's and a drive of under 10 miles towards Exeter are very different jobs.

Let us know about how far it had come.

There is more to flush once your engine has been run, and our technicians do all of it where the vehicle has stopped.

If it's noticed early, long-term damage is very rare.

## What emptying AdBlue from a diesel involves in Whimple

Wherever it has stopped in Whimple — a forecourt, a lay-by, a driveway, a road beside Whimple Heritage Centre — the van travels to the vehicle.

Before anything else our technicians ask what got in, roughly how much, and if your engine has been run, because those answers determine this work.

The contaminated diesel and the urea leave together after your tank is drained, on the spot.

With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, the flush matters: the whole system is cleaned all the way through since residue won't flush out unaided.

Clean diesel goes in once your filter is cleaned — or swapped, if it needs to be — and then your vehicle is tested.

If the motor hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there.

Explosion-proof pumps mean a busy forecourt sensible to work on, and they run quiet enough not to disturb the neighbours at night.

Bleeding the system with new diesel comes at the end.

Whether it's a parking space at the nearest station or a drive around Whimple, that is where we fire it up and you drive off.

The test before our technicians leave is that it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

Since the job is done in its entirety where your car is, a garage never comes into it.

Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both at the end.

## About Whimple, briefly

Whimple is a village in Devon, situated inland at an elevation of 49 metres, approximately 8 miles east of Exeter. Whimple has a population of around 1120 people and is characterised by predominantly detached housing. Whimple is close to nearby places such as Aller Grove, Strete Ralegh, and Hand and Pen, and is located in the South West region of England. Whimple is about 149 miles west of London.

## AdBlue drains across Devon, Whimple included

Aller Grove, Strete Ralegh and Hand and Pen are among the places around Whimple that the same vans reach, together with much of Devon beyond, over the EX postcode area.

Close to a border, or somewhere tricky to pin down? Asking is better than guessing, so phone.

No moving is needed. In Whimple, a rural village, a van that comes to you works: the car is emptied where it stands, whether in a drive, a residential street, a car park or a filling station.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Whimple

Every job is different, so not one single quote is fair.

What moves the cost is, first of all, whether your engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and then where the vehicle is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight space behind Whimple Victory Hall.

Ahead of any figure, never after, each call from Whimple begins with the same three questions: the liquid, the quantity, and whether it ran.

Those replies turn a range into a straight quote.

Before anyone sets off, you are told the price by phone. And payment is on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Check your insurance whilst we're on the way: plenty include misfuelling cover.

## Whimple: still next to the car?

In that case, touch nothing — that is the best step available.

Keys out; engine and ignition off.

Petrol in Diesel handles the rest, across Whimple or wherever within Devon, once you ring 0333 366 0103 saying it was AdBlue, about how big an amount, and whether it ran.
