# How It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Whitehall

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then put this page down for now, leave your ignition and engine off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a thorough flush, done right where the car sits around Whitehall, is normally all it needs if found before your motor runs.

Nothing happened yet? Below, the page explains the reasons it occurs and the how to prevent it altogether.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Many current diesels on the roads around Whitehall and Bull Hill carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor.

Your exhaust, not the engine, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the gas to clean them, from a separate tank.

There is a filler for every tank.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the layout on many cars. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead.

Diesel gets filled on each forecourt visit, again and again.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less regularly, normally from a bottle, and normally by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

It is in that gap that the mistake lives.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Whitehall: how it happens

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

Haste comes from the warning. Your car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a drive off A666, or on the way home in the car park at The Spinners.

New-to-you vehicles are second, as well. Hire cars, new vehicles and company vehicles put their fillers in new places, and habit goes for the cap used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, after begun, carries on.

Whether it takes place in Sough or the middle of Whitehall, it is the same few seconds.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Check these first, on a forecourt in Whitehall or a driveway out in Darwen. Seconds, no more.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually is not. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- Plenty of motors fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- Look inside the fuel flap: many vehicles carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- Can't find it beside your diesel filler? Then look beneath the bonnet or in the boot — the owner's manual says where.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park at Darwen, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Lancashire that is.

- Turn off after you park — flat ground, motor off, and not in a rush beside Watery Lane on the verge.

- Silly as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew the cap works — once you've located the filler and read it.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where both share a flap, confirm it is shut before the bottle comes up.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start your car: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Never carry on to step five.

## Whitehall: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

What follows is a short order of things, beginning with no starting your engine.

Keep your ignition off too, because on plenty of diesels it by itself starts your fuel pump.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is sucked from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it's the Shell or the Texaco, ask the attendants to help roll the vehicle clear of the petrol pump.

If you are on your own driveway around Whitehall, leave the vehicle where it is.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

Leave the M65 — under 3 miles out of Whitehall — at the first exit.

Mileage matters — a short hop across Whitehall is a smaller job than driving under 15 miles to Preston — so say roughly how far it went.

## What takes place when our engineers turn up around Whitehall

Our van reaches your car wherever it stopped — your own driveway, beside St Barnabas, or by Ashleigh Primary School.

What liquid got in, the quantity, and whether it ran: our technicians ask since the replies set both work and quote.

During the call itself, you are told our price — before dispatch.

Then that tank is emptied and the fuel system rinsed thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that matters more here than with petrol.

Once the filter has been cleaned — or replaced, if required — clean diesel is added, and finally the vehicle gets tested.

Your engine is started next and tested to be sure it runs correctly, all before we go.

Unstarted cars mostly mean a half-hour visit from the moment we arrive. The kit is fine on a live forecourt, and hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork your insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

It is worth looking at your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.

## About Whitehall and where it is

Whitehall is a suburban area in Lancashire, situated on the lakeside at an elevation of 209 metres. Whitehall lies near several smaller communities, including Sough, Spring Vale, and Radford, and is approximately 11 miles from Preston. Whitehall has a population of around 4887 people, predominantly living in terraced housing. Whitehall is also relatively distant from London, at a distance of 179 miles.

## AdBlue drains across Lancashire, Whitehall included

Whitehall is a residential suburb, and the teams that cover it also work the towns around it, Spring Vale and Radford among them, across the BB postcode area.

Give a postcode that starts BB3 2, and the van arrives quickest.

Your car doesn't need to move.

The drain happens right there, whether a driveway, a road by War Memorial, or a layby towards Whitehall Park.

Assuming won't help at the back of South African War Memorial, close to a boundary, or anywhere awkward to describe; ring and check.

## The short version for Whitehall people

Tip nothing till you have read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank regardless, leave the car off then phone 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel empties it where it waits, anywhere across Lancashire.
