# Whitehaven: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? In that case put this page aside a moment, keep the ignition and motor off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a full flush, carried out right where your car sits in Whitehaven, is usually what it takes if found before the motor runs.

If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Not one liquid but two: that's what many newer diesels around Whitehaven and Corkickle run, with diesel feeding the motor.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it is sent to the exhaust, and there a spray treats the gas.

Different tanks, separate fillers.

Some motors put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others have the two side by side behind one flap.

At the petrol pump, the diesel side gets filled constantly.

Far less regularly, the AdBlue side gets topped up — mostly from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

Mistakes happen in the gap between the two.

## Whitehaven: how AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

On a drive off Tangier Street before work, or in the car park outside The Bransty Arch on the way home: that's where the rushed top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low the vehicle tells you, and if it's gone, limp mode follows.

The old car's cap is where your hand reaches — but a hire car, a new motor or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That's a second thing: a new vehicle.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour once it has started.

Whether it happens in Bransty or the middle of Whitehaven, it is the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Be it a Whitehaven forecourt or a driveway over in Bleachgreen, take a few seconds over these before anything goes in.

- Check the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue caps are regularly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually aren't.

- The size. On many motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler sits if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- The previous driver knows. Ask as you collect a rental or fleet car — from the nearest station's car park, perhaps — rather than once the light appears.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

Wherever across Cumbria the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Gregg's Lane.

- Silly as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap works — after you've located your filler and read the cap.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start the car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Find at stage two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? So stop right there.

Leave out step five entirely.

## Whitehaven: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

The short order of things, beginning with not starting your engine.

Do not switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Diluting it with extra diesel won't work, since AdBlue sinks to the base instead of blending — and that's where the fuel is drawn from.

On a forecourt — Tesco, Morrisons or another — the attendants will usually help push the car away, when you ask.

Your own driveway in Whitehaven is where it should stay.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if the motor has already run.

The next junction means the place to leave if you are on the M6, under 50 miles from Whitehaven.

About how far did it go? Crossing Whitehaven is smaller a job than a trip of under 50 miles towards Carlisle, and so say.

## What happens when our engineers get there around Whitehaven

Wherever your car came to rest, whether by St James' CofE Infant and Nursery School, beside Gaiety Cinema or on your own drive, the van travels to it.

The answers settle the work and the price, and so our technicians ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it has run.

During the phone call itself, you are told the quote — before anything else.

Then your tank is emptied and the fuel system cleaned thoroughly.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and none of it washes out unaided. Hence it counts more.

The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

Then we fire it up and make sure it runs properly before we go.

With pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the engine hasn't run need about half an hour once our engineers arrive.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.

## About Whitehaven and where it is

Whitehaven is a coastal town situated in Cumbria, England, with a significant port. It is located near the Lake District National Park, but just outside its boundaries. The town is part of a larger parish that also encompasses the village of Sandwith. Whitehaven is positioned in the north-west of England, within reach of the city of Carlisle.

## Whitehaven and Cumbria: AdBlue drains across the area

Over CA postcodes, the teams covering Whitehaven — a coastal town — work the surrounding places too, Harras and Arrowthwaite included.

A postcode starting CA28 7 gets our van to you fastest.

Your car doesn't need to shift.

A driveway, a lay-by on the way to St Beghs Priory Church Park, a side street close to St James: our engineers drain the car where it stands.

If you're close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain like the back of St Nicholas, ring and ask rather than guessing.

## For Whitehaven people, the short version

Before you pour, read the cap.

AdBlue in the diesel tank regardless? Leave it off then ring 0333 366 0103; Petrol in Diesel drains it where it stands, throughout Cumbria.
