# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Whitehills: Why It Happens and How to Stop It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and your ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a full flush, done right where your vehicle sits in Whitehills, is usually what it takes if found before the engine runs.

The remainder of this page covers why it takes place and how to make sure it does not — handy if you are reading before it has happened.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Many current diesels on the roads around Whitehills and Banff carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank comes with one filler of its own.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, your diesel side is topped up all the time.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less frequently, usually from a bottle, and usually by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

It's in the gap that the error lives.

## Whitehills: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

On a driveway off Seafield Street before work, or in the car park at Seafield Arms heading home: that's where the hurried top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low your car warns you, and if it is empty, limp mode kicks in.

Next, the hand goes for the cap it would have used on the old car — since a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car places the fillers where your last one didn't.

Nothing halts the pour after it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Whitehills or out in Inverboyndie.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Check these first, at a forecourt in Whitehills or a drive over in Macduff. A few seconds, that's all.

- Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- Plenty of cars give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- Lift the filler flap and check for a label — plenty of cars show which goes in each filler just there.

- Cannot find it next to the diesel filler? Then check beneath the bonnet or inside the boot — the owner's manual will say which.

- The previous driver will know. Ask when you pick up a rental or company car — at the nearest station's car park, perhaps — not once the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

Wherever in Aberdeenshire the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

- Not in a rush on the side of Loch Street, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park then switch off first.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft. It works.

- The diesel cap stays on. Where both share a flap, make sure it is shut before the bottle comes up.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Before starting your car, shut the cap and check a second time that your diesel cap was never came off.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side.

Leave out step five entirely.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Whitehills?

Short list, then. Top of that: your motor stays unstarted.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch it on.

Thinning it with more diesel won't work, since AdBlue settles to the base rather than blending — and that's where the fuel is pulled from.

The staff at Shell, another forecourt nearby or another forecourt will usually help to push the car clear when asked.

If you are on your own drive around Whitehills, leave it where it is.

Where your motor has run already, pull over safely then turn the car off.

Leave the M90 — over 50 miles out of Whitehills — at the first exit.

About how far did it go? Crossing Whitehills is smaller work than a run of under 50 miles towards Aberdeen, and so say.

## Whitehills: what takes place when our technicians get there

Our technicians come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside the local primary school, near New Haul or on your own driveway.

What liquid was put in, the amount, and whether it ran: our technicians ask because those replies set the work and price.

The price is given on the call, before any van leaves.

The system is then purged thoroughly, after that tank is cleared.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own.

After the fuel filter has been cleaned — or replaced, if needed — fresh diesel goes in, and then the vehicle is tested.

Before we go, we fire it up and make sure that it is running correctly.

With pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your motor hasn't run need about half an hour once we arrive.

No money in advance; you settle up on the day. At the end, a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours while we're on the way.

## Whitehills and Aberdeenshire: AdBlue drains across the area

Whitehills is a coastal village, and the vans that cover it also work the places around it, Ladysbridge and Boyndie among them, across the AB postcode area.

A postcode starting AB45 2 gets the van to you fastest.

The vehicle does not need to move.

Anywhere it sits — beside Whitehills Library, in a lay-by en route to School Park, on a drive — that's where it is drained.

Tricky to pin down, like the back of Whitehills Parish Church? By a county line? Checking is better than guessing, so ring.

## In short, for Whitehills people

Pour nothing until you've read the cap.

Even so AdBlue in the diesel tank? Petrol in Diesel will empty it where it is, anywhere across Aberdeenshire: keep it off then call 0333 366 0103.
