# Whiteknights: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then leave the engine off — and your ignition as well.

Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue.

It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does starts when the system pulls it in.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Whiteknights, is normally all AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it is caught before the engine has run.

First, call us on 0333 366 0103.

## Your next steps right now, Whiteknights: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Do these:

- Pull your keys out, and so no one switches your ignition on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.

- Hold on to your receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what was put in and about how much.

- Give us a postcode starting RG1 5, or whatever street lies closest, and the van reaches you directly — so ring wherever you stand.

Do not:

- Not even for a second, and not to shift the vehicle: the motor stays off.

- The ignition remains off: on many diesels, turning it on is enough to start your pump.

- AdBlue does not mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding more fuel won't weaken it.

- Do not drive the car anywhere, not even a short stretch down Waybrook Crescent.

- No emptying it yourself, either, on the roadside.

The staff working at any Whiteknights filling station — the BP among them — will usually help rolling it clear if you ask.

On that drive, your car remains just as it was left.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

The motor is not what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to fresh it.

No part in a fuel pump is made for this fluid — and none of it was meant to travel that way.

Poured in with the diesel, it keeps separate rather than mixing — entirely unlike fuel.

Heavier than diesel, it drops and pools underneath it — the same place the intake draws from.

The first thing your fuel system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a car that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in The Parade last night, and has not been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of your tank, and nothing has sucked it in.

Two kinds of harm come from there.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps labouring on the parts it hits for as long as it remains there.

Where the AdBlue has reached the pipework, leaving it overnight in Whiteknights makes things worse. In that tank only, time does nothing.

Then there's the water: it offers no protection to the parts that need it most — the high-pressure pump and every injector.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is commonly more significant than petrol

An issue of thinned fuel is what you get from fuelling a diesel with petrol from the Tesco.

It mixes with your diesel, and whilst it's in that tank it causes no harm; the harm comes from running the motor on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid as such is plainly the wrong one.

It doesn't burn, so it cannot simply be run through.

Whether your vehicle sits in Whitley or the heart of Whiteknights, turning it over "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other slip, and the flush matters for more. The reasons: it will not remain mixed, and so watering it down fails; and crystals and corrosion survive the next tankful.

The same good news applies as with petrol.

If the motor hasn't run, the AdBlue is still in the tank, and the tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in Berkshire the car is sitting.

## Whiteknights: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

After dark, two caps together — the AdBlue one and the diesel one, now and then under one flap — can appear the same. Nobody intends it; plenty of layouts allow it.

A container picked up when heading home and poured in outside the house, instead of at the filling station, is the typical route.

It tends to occur in a few familiar ways.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up occurs in a hurry outside Redlands Primary School.

Someone pours the container in at home, just off Upper Redlands Road, as the day ends.

Or your car is topped up in the car park at The Palmer Tavern, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

Rented motors, new motors, fleet motors, or the spare vehicle in a family with both fuels: the least known cars see it most.

Keep it switched off: that is the first response to an identical slip, anywhere in Whiteknights or the remainder of Berkshire you are.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Whiteknights, and the engine started?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer in the tank.

The filter and pipework have had it sucked along, and some running carries it on to the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Maybe returning from Ridgeline Trust Therapeutic Wildlife Garden, or part way across Whiteknights, your engine may run rough, smoke, lose power, light up your dash or cut out.

Stop when safe. Turn off. Keep it off instead of testing it again.

Each start pulls more of that through.

Exit the M4, under 3 miles from Whiteknights, by the next junction and stop somewhere safe, not driving on.

Each mile pushes the AdBlue further in. That's why a hop across Whiteknights to park near St William of York and a drive of under 50 miles towards Oxford are very separate jobs.

Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

Wherever the car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to rinse out after your engine has been running.

Noticed quickly, it very rarely leaves long-term damage.

## Clearing AdBlue in a diesel in Whiteknights: what it takes

Our technicians come to your car, wherever it has stopped in Whiteknights: a side street near Park United Reformed Church, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

The work rests on three replies, which we get before all else — which fluid was put in, the quantity, and whether the motor has turned over.

On the spot, that tank is then drained, and both the polluted diesel and the urea leave at once.

What remains from AdBlue won't wash out unaided, and so the whole system gets a full flush, which matters much more with urea than with petrol.

Next, the fuel filter: flushed, or replaced if it has to be. After that fresh diesel, then a test of the vehicle.

The majority of these jobs are a half-hour job once our technicians get there, provided your motor hasn't run.

Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, so a live forecourt is no issue, and it is quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

New diesel goes in to bleed the system, and that is the final step.

You set off as soon as our engineers have started the engine, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a drive around Whiteknights or in a bay by Earley.

It is checked on clean diesel to confirm it runs properly before we head off.

As the job is done in full where the car is, a garage never comes into it.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report later, which is what insurers want.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Whiteknights?

Every job is different, and so not one single price is honest.

Whether your engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the price. How much AdBlue was put in comes next, and then the position of the car, because an open drive is easier for a technician to get to safely than a tight spot behind Icehouse.

That's why each call from Whiteknights starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and if it's run.

With those replies, the range narrows to a single fixed number.

You get that price by phone, before anybody heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
