# How It Occurs and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Whitelea Grange

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the engine and the ignition off and call 0333 366 0103.

Normally, if the engine has not turned, it's drained and fully flushed where the vehicle sits around Whitelea Grange.

Nothing happened yet? Further down, the page covers the reasons it takes place and the ways to prevent it for good.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Many modern diesels in Hall Close Grange, as well as Whitelea Grange, run on two fluids; the motor gets just the diesel.

The exhaust, not the engine, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the gas to clean them, from a separate tank.

Different tanks, separate fillers.

Many of vehicles have a single flap for both, whereas others put the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is fuelled at the petrol pump all the time.

Rarely filled, AdBlue normally goes in out of a bottle, tipped by someone who must stop and think which filler to use.

The error lives in that gap.

## Whitelea Grange: how AdBlue in the diesel tank happens

Carelessness rarely causes it. What does is three things lining up together.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out completely, your vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Harnham Grove before work, or in the car park outside Lord of the Manor on the way home.

The old car's filler is where your hand goes — but a rental car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That's a second thing: a strange vehicle.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip after it has started.

It takes seconds, whether out in Hall Close Dale or right in the heart of Whitelea Grange.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A few seconds is all these take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a drive in Whitelea Chase or a forecourt around Whitelea Grange.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually isn't. Read it rather than going by position.

- The size. On many vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Lift the filler flap and look for a label — plenty of cars show what belongs in which inlet just there.

- Can't find it beside your diesel inlet? Then look below the bonnet or inside your boot — the handbook will say which.

- The previous driver knows. Check when you collect a hire car or fleet car — from Cramlington's car park, perhaps — not once the light appears.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

The day the light comes on, anywhere across Northumberland, follow this routine.

- Switch off once parked — flat ground, motor stopped, and never rushed by Hebron Way on the verge.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" aloud while unscrewing it. It sounds daft. It does the trick.

- The diesel cap remains on. When both share a flap, make sure it's closed before lifting the bottle.

- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Shut the cap, and check once more — confirm your diesel cap stayed shut throughout. After that, start your car.

Discover during the second or third step that the bottle went into the diesel tank? That is where you stop.

Skip step five entirely.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Whitelea Grange?

What follows is a short order of things, beginning with not starting the engine.

Keep your ignition off too, because on plenty of diesels it alone runs your pump.

Thinning it with extra diesel won't work, since AdBlue settles to the base instead of mixing — and that's where your fuel is pulled from.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it is the Sainsbury's or the Magpie Service Station, ask the attendants to help push the vehicle away from the petrol pump.

If you're on your own driveway in Whitelea Grange, leave it where it is.

Already started? Pull over once it's sensible, then turn off.

The next junction is where to leave if you are on the A167(M), under 10 miles from Whitelea Grange.

About how far did it go? Hopping across Whitelea Grange is smaller work than a run of under 10 miles towards Newcastle upon Tyne, so tell us.

## What takes place when our engineers get there around Whitelea Grange

The van reaches your car wherever it has come to rest — your own drive, beside Vue Cinema Cramlington, or by Hareside Primary School.

Those replies settle the work and the quote, so our engineers ask what went in, about how much, and whether it's run.

You get that quote by phone, before anybody sets off.

Draining your tank comes next, followed by a thorough flush of the fuel system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

We don't go until it has been fired up and is running smoothly.

If your motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork your insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Wrong-fuel cover is included in plenty of insurance policies — so make use of the wait to look at yours.
