# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Whitemoor: Why It Occurs and How to Stop It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the engine and the ignition off and call 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your engine runs, it is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Whitemoor.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Many newer diesels in Ladyes Hills, like those in Whitemoor, carry on two liquids; the motor gets only the diesel.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust stream to clean it.

Separate tanks, different fillers.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the layout on many cars. On others, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead.

The diesel side is filled at the pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less frequently, usually from a bottle, and usually by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

It's in the gap that the slip happens.

## Whitemoor: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from the car, and running dry leads to limp mode — hence a hurried top-up, maybe before work off Whitemoor Road, or outside The Tiltyard on the way home that evening.

Then, the hand reaches for the cap it knew on the old motor — since a rental car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not.

Nothing halts the tip after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

It's a few seconds, whether in Windy Arbour or bang in the heart of Whitemoor.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a drive in Kenilworth or a forecourt in Whitemoor.

- Check the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue caps are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually aren't.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by the diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park outside Kenilworth, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Warwickshire that is.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Ashdene Gardens.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Stop when the tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; until then, tip slowly through the built-in spout.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Spot at stage two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? Then stop just there.

Never go on to stage five.

## Whitemoor: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Don't start your engine: that is where the short order of things begins.

Leave the ignition off as well, because on many diesels it alone starts your pump.

Filling up with diesel will not thin it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the base of that tank, just where fuel is drawn from.

The staff at Esso, Texaco or another forecourt will normally lend a hand pushing the car away if asked.

If you are on your own drive around Whitemoor, leave the vehicle where it stands.

Where your motor has run by now, stop somewhere safe then turn it off.

Leave the M40 — under 10 miles out of Whitemoor — at the first exit.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Coventry, under 10 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Whitemoor.

## When our technicians arrive in Whitemoor, what takes place?

The van reaches the vehicle wherever it stopped — your own driveway, near Kenilworth Methodist Church, or by Thorns Community Infant School.

Those answers settle this work and our price, and so we ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it has run.

The quote is given on the call, before any van leaves.

Next: draining, then a thorough flush of the entire system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more here than with petrol.

A test comes last: before that, clean diesel goes in, and the fuel filter is cleaned or changed if necessary.

Then we fire it up and confirm it runs correctly before leaving.

If your engine hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

The insurer usually wants an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both once the job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit.

Misfuelling cover is included in many insurance policies — so use the wait to look at yours.
