# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Whiterock: Why It Happens and How to Prevent It

Leave the engine and ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103 now — the rest can wait when AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Around Whiterock, catching it before the engine runs usually means a drain and a full flush where it stands.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it does not.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Diesel goes to the motor — yet many modern diesels seen round Whiterock and Bridgend carry another fluid too.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Every tank has a filler of its own.

Plenty of vehicles have a single flap for the two, while others move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, the diesel side gets filled constantly.

Rarely topped up, AdBlue normally comes out of a bottle, tipped by someone who has to stop and think which filler it needs.

It is in that gap that the error happens.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank occur in Whiterock?

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, your vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Priory Road before work, or in the car park at Cabo Roche on the way home.

Next, your hand reaches for the cap it knew on the old car — since a rental car, a new motor or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour once it has started.

Hernston or the heart of Whiterock: it is the same few seconds either way.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Be it a Whiterock forecourt or a driveway over in Newcastle, spend a couple of seconds on these before any is poured in.

- Check the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are frequently blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually are not.

- On plenty of cars, size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of cars say there which fuel goes where.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where the filler sits if it's not by the diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at Bridgend? Check with the person who drove it last before you set off, rather than once the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Bridgend that is.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Priory Gardens.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, yes, yet it does the trick.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Before you start the vehicle, close the cap and look a second time that the diesel cap was never opened off.

Find at stage two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? Then stop just there.

Step five stays out.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Whiterock already?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your motor.

On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch it on.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it is the Texaco or the BP, ask the attendants to help roll your car clear of the petrol pump.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway in Whiterock.

If your engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

Come off the M4 — under 3 miles out of Whiterock — at the first exit.

A short hop across Whiterock is a smaller job than a run towards Cardiff, under 25 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Whiterock: what takes place when our technicians turn up

Our technicians come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside the local primary school, close to Solid Rock Youth Centre or on your own driveway.

Those replies settle the work and the price, so our engineers ask what got in, about how much, and if it has run.

Nobody sets off before you have had the quote by phone.

The system is then rinsed thoroughly, after that tank is cleared.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

Testing is at the end: before that, clean diesel goes in, and your filter is flushed or changed if necessary.

We don't go until it has been fired up and is running correctly.

Using pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where the engine hasn't run take about half an hour once our engineers arrive.

Your insurer will ask for the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
