# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Whiteway: Why It Happens

Leave the motor and ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103 now — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Caught before the motor runs, it is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Whiteway.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Many modern diesels on the roads around Whiteway and Rockness carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust gas to clean it.

Every tank has a filler of its own.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

At the petrol pump, the diesel side gets filled all the time.

Seldom filled, AdBlue usually goes in from a bottle, tipped by a driver who must stop and think which cap it needs.

It's in that gap that the mistake lives.

## Whiteway: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from the vehicle, and running out leads to limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Horsley Hill, or at The Hog on the way home that evening.

The old car's filler is where the hand reaches — but a rental car, a new car or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That's a second factor: a new car.

Third, the bottle fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in as readily, and once the tip starts, nothing stops it.

It's seconds, be it out in Wallow Green or bang in the heart of Whiteway.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Whether a Whiteway forecourt or a drive over in Horsley, take a few seconds over these before any goes in.

- Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on plenty of cars, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside your fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on many cars. Look for it.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler is if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park outside Stroud, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Gloucestershire that is.

- Pull in somewhere level, engine off, with time in hand — never rushing on the side of Stevens Way.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.

- Both behind one flap? So confirm the lid on your diesel side stays shut before lifting the bottle.

- Stop when your tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; before that, pour gently using its built-in spout.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Stage five is off limits.

## Whiteway: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Do not start the engine: that is how the short order of things begins.

Do not switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Diluting it with more diesel fails, since AdBlue settles to the base rather than mixing — and that's where the fuel is drawn from.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it is the Shell or the Esso, ask the attendants to help roll the vehicle away from the petrol pump.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive in Whiteway.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your engine has already run.

Come off the M5 — under 10 miles out of Whiteway — at the first exit.

Distance matters — a short hop across Whiteway is a smaller job than heading under 15 miles towards Gloucester — so tell us roughly how far it went.

## What happens when we arrive around Whiteway

Our technicians come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Horsley Church of England Primary School, near Saint Martin or on your own drive.

We ask what was put in, about how much, and whether it's run, because the answers decide the work and our quote.

On the call itself, you are told our price — ahead of anything else.

Next: a drain, then a thorough flush of the entire system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

The filter flushed or, if needed, swapped; clean diesel in; and then a test of your vehicle.

We do not go until it has been fired up and is running smoothly.

If the motor hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents an insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we're on the way.

## AdBlue drains in Whiteway and across Gloucestershire

Whiteway is a residential suburb, and the teams that cover it also work the towns near it, Harleywood and Tickmorend among them, across the GL postcode area.

Fastest of all: give a GL6 0 postcode to our van.

There's no need to move your car.

We drain it where it is — a side street near Horsley Village Hall, a lay-by on the way to Horsley Recreation Ground, a driveway.

Tricky to explain, like the back of Nailsworth Town Hall? Close to a county line? Asking is better than assuming, so ring.

## Whiteway people: the short version

Before you pour, read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank all the same, leave the vehicle off then ring 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel clears it where it stands, anywhere across Gloucestershire.
