# How It Happens and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Whithorn

Keep your motor and ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103 now — the rest can wait when AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

In Whithorn, catching it before your engine turns usually leaves a drain and a thorough flush where it stands.

The rest of this page explains why it occurs and how to ensure it does not — handy if you're reading before it has happened.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Many newer diesels around Sorbie, like those in Whithorn, carry on two liquids; the engine gets only the diesel.

AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, where a spray cleans the fumes.

There's a filler for each tank.

Many of vehicles have a single flap for both, while others put the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

Topping up your diesel side at the petrol pump happens all the time.

Seldom filled, AdBlue normally goes in from a bottle, poured by someone who has to stop and think what cap it needs.

The slip lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank occur in Whithorn?

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

On a driveway off Castlehill before work, or in the car park outside the pub in the village heading home: that is where the hurried top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it is empty, limp mode follows.

The old car's cap is where the hand goes — yet a hire car, a new car or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That's the second thing: a new car.

Lastly, the spout fits: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in just as easily, and once the pour starts, no part stops it.

Whether it takes place in Glasserton or the middle of Whithorn, it is the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a drive in Garlieston or a forecourt in Whithorn.

- Read the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue ones are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones usually are not.

- On plenty of motors, size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Look inside your fuel flap: many cars carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- The handbook says which it is if the filler is not next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside the nearest station, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

The day the light comes on, anywhere around Dumfries and Galloway, use this routine.

- Pull in somewhere level, motor off, with time in hand — never rushing on the side of St John Street.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- The diesel cap stays on. Where both sit under a flap, confirm it is closed before the bottle comes up.

- Finish when the tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; until then, pour gently using the built-in spout.

- Close the cap, and check once more — confirm your diesel cap remained closed throughout. After that, start your car.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Don't carry on to step five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Whithorn?

Do not start the motor: that is where the short order of things begins.

The fuel pump starts on many diesels the moment the ignition is switched on — so leave it off.

Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is pulled from.

Ask the attendants to help push the vehicle clear of the petrol pump if you are on a forecourt — the the nearest petrol station, the another forecourt nearby or anywhere else.

At home in Whithorn? Then the car remains where it is.

Where the motor has run by now, pull over somewhere safe and turn the car off.

Whithorn sits under 50 miles from the A74(M); on it, take the next junction.

A short hop across Whithorn is a smaller job than a run towards Carlisle, over 50 miles away, and so tell us about how far it went.

## What happens when our technicians get there in Whithorn

Our engineers come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside the local primary school, near Plaque to John Brent (George Dickie) or on your own drive.

What fluid was put in, the quantity, and whether it ran: our engineers ask because the replies set the work and price.

That quote comes over the phone, before any van leaves.

After that: draining, then a full flush of the whole system.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and none of that clears out unaided. Hence it counts more.

Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Before we go, our engineers start it and make sure that it's running properly.

If your engine has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents your insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Before we get there, have a look at your policy; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.
