# Whitstone: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Stop here a minute when the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and call 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the engine runs, it is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Whitstone.

Reading before the event? In that case the rest explains why it comes about and how to prevent it happening at all.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Diesel goes to the motor — yet many current diesels seen round Whitstone and Week Green hold another liquid too.

The exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the gas to clean it, from a separate tank.

Different tanks, different fillers.

Other motors keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others have the two together under one flap.

At the petrol pump, your diesel side is topped up all the time.

Seldom filled, AdBlue usually comes from a bottle, poured by a driver who has to stop and think what filler to use.

The error lives in that gap.

## Whitstone: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

Carelessness rarely causes it. Instead is three things coming up at once.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out completely, your vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Oak Lane before work, or in the car park at the pub in the village on the way home.

New-to-you vehicles come next, as well. Rentals, new vehicles and company vehicles put their fillers in new places, and habit reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

Lastly, the bottle fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in as readily, and after the tip begins, no part halts it.

Bakesdown or the middle of Whitstone: it is the same few seconds in both.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A few seconds is all these take — so check them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Budds Titson or a forecourt around Whitstone.

- Where it sits misleads; the cap does not. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones usually do not.

- Many cars fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- A label inside your fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on many vehicles. Check for it.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by your diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park at the nearest station? Check with whoever drove the car last before leaving, rather than when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Cornwall that is.

- Turn off once parked — level ground, motor stopped, and not in a rush beside Paradise Park on the verge.

- Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap works — once you've located your filler and read the cap.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Skip stage five entirely.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Whitstone?

Do not start the motor: that is how the short order of things starts.

Leave the ignition off as well, because on plenty of diesels it by itself starts your fuel pump.

Diluting it with extra diesel fails, since AdBlue settles to the bottom rather than blending — and that's where the fuel is pulled from.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it is the the nearest petrol station or the another forecourt nearby, ask the attendants to help push the vehicle clear of the petrol pump.

At home around Whitstone? So the vehicle stays where it is.

If your engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

On the M5, under 50 miles from Whitstone, that means the next exit.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Plymouth, under 50 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Whitstone.

## Whitstone: what happens when our technicians arrive

Outside Whitstone Primary School, close to St Anne or on your own drive: wherever the car has stopped, our technicians come to it.

Both the work and our quote rest on three answers — which liquid, what amount, and if it has run — so we ask.

No one sets off until you have had the quote by phone.

Draining that tank comes next, followed by a thorough flush of the fuel system.

Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and eats at some fuel-system metals, and neither clears away unaided. Hence it counts more.

Once your filter has been cleaned — or replaced, if needed — clean diesel is added, and then your vehicle is tested.

Before we go, our technicians start the car and make sure that it is running smoothly.

If the motor hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

The insurer will ask for the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both once the job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

Misfuelling cover is included in plenty of insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to look at yours.

## AdBlue drains around Whitstone and across Cornwall

As a rural village, Whitstone shares its vans nearby places — Merrifield, Week St Mary — right through EX postcodes and the surrounding area around them.

Quote a postcode beginning EX22 6, and the van arrives quickest.

Your car stays put.

Wherever it sits — beside St Mary the Virgin, in a layby en route to Whitstone Wood, at home — that's where it is cleared.

If you're close to a border, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of Ashbury hill fort, ring and ask instead of assuming.

## The short version for Whitstone drivers

Before you tip, read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank anyway, leave the vehicle off then ring 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel drains it where it sits, anywhere across Cornwall.
