# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Whitton: Why It Occurs

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and your ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103.

In Whitton, catching it before your engine turns normally leaves draining and a full flush on the spot.

Nothing happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page covers the reasons it occurs and the ways to prevent it for good.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Not one fluid but two: that's what plenty of modern diesels near Whitton and Westerfield carry, with diesel feeding your motor.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust gas to clean it.

Each tank has one filler of its own.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the arrangement on many vehicles. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead.

Filling the diesel side at the petrol pump happens constantly.

A driver who has to stop and think where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less frequently.

Mistakes happen in that gap between them.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Whitton: how it occurs

It is rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out completely, your vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Goldsmith Road before work, or in the car park at Man on the Moon on the way home.

Unfamiliar vehicles are next, as well. Rentals, new vehicles and company cars place their fillers differently, and habit goes for the cap it used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

Castle Hill or the middle of Whitton: it is the same few seconds either way.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Be it a Whitton forecourt or a driveway out in Bramford, take a couple of seconds on these before anything is poured in.

- Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- Check inside your fuel flap: many cars carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler is if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Westerfield.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

When the light comes on, wherever in Suffolk, use this routine.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Byron Road.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, yes, yet it works.

- Both under one flap? Then make sure the cap on your diesel side is still closed before lifting the bottle.

- Finish once the tank fills or the bottle is empty; before that, pour gently using the own spout.

- Only then, start the car: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side.

Stage five is out.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Whitton?

Do not start your engine: that is where the short order of things begins.

The fuel pump runs on many diesels as soon as your ignition is switched on — so leave it off.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is pulled from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

Ask the attendants to help roll the vehicle away from the pump if you're at a forecourt — the Shell, the BP or somewhere else.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive in Whitton.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your engine has already run.

Whitton sits under 50 miles from the M11; on it, use the first exit.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Colchester, under 25 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Whitton.

## Whitton: what takes place when our engineers arrive

Anywhere the car came to rest, be it outside The Beeches Community Primary School, beside Whitton Sports & Community Centre or at home, our van travels to it.

Those replies determine this work and the quote, and so our technicians ask what got in, about how much, and whether it's run.

On the call itself, you are told the price — before anything else.

After that: a drain, then a thorough flush of the entire system.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own.

The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

Before we go, our engineers fire it up and check that it is running smoothly.

Unstarted cars usually need a half-hour job after arrival. The equipment is safe on a busy forecourt, and hushed enough for a driveway after dark.

Your insurer will ask for an engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both once this job is done. Payment is on the day, with no deposit.

Misfuelling cover is included in plenty of insurance policies — so use the wait to look at yours.

## AdBlue drains round Whitton, and Suffolk beyond

Akenham and Westbourne are among the places around Whitton, a residential suburb, that the same teams cover, throughout IP postcodes.

Quote a postcode that starts IP1 6, and our van gets there quickest.

The vehicle remains where it is.

Our engineers drain it where it is — a side street near Whitton Sports and Community Centre, a lay-by on the way to Whitton Recreation Ground, a drive.

Ring and ask rather than assuming if you're close to a border, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of Full Gospel Church.

## For Whitton motorists, the short version

Before you tip, read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank anyway, leave the vehicle off and call 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel clears it where it waits, anywhere around Suffolk.
