# Wick: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case set this page aside for now, leave the ignition and motor off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

Around Wick, finding it before the motor turns usually leaves draining and a full flush on the spot.

The rest of this page covers why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't — handy if you are reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Many newer diesels around Llandow, like those in Wick, carry on two liquids; your engine takes just your diesel.

AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it is sent to the exhaust, where spraying treats the fumes.

Every tank has one filler of its own.

Many of vehicles share a single flap for both, whereas some move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

At the petrol pump, your diesel side gets filled all the time.

A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less commonly.

It is in the gap that the mistake lives.

## Wick: how AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from the vehicle, and letting it run dry leads to limp mode — so a hurried top-up, maybe before work off Church Road, or outside Lamb and Flag on the way home that evening.

The old car's cap is where the hand reaches — but a rental car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That is a second thing: a new car.

A spout-topped bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, after started, keeps on.

Whether it takes place in Tre-pit or the middle of Wick, it is the same few seconds.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in Marcross or a forecourt in Wick, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally is not. Read it instead of going by where it sits.

- The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Open the filler flap and check for a label — many motors mark what belongs in each inlet just there.

- The handbook shows which it is if your filler is not next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park outside Llantwit Major, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

The day the light comes on, anywhere around The Vale of Glamorgan, follow this routine.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Broughton Road.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, yes, but it works.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where the two sit under a flap, confirm it's shut before the bottle comes up.

- Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle runs out.

- Only after that, start the vehicle: close the cap, check once more, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Find at stage two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? Then stop right there.

Do not go on to stage five.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Wick already?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your motor.

The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels the moment the ignition goes on — and so keep it off.

Thinning it with extra diesel won't work, because AdBlue sinks to the base instead of blending — and that's where your fuel is pulled from.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it's the BP or the another forecourt nearby, ask the attendants to help roll your car clear of the pump.

Your own drive in Wick is the place it stays.

Where your motor has run already, pull over somewhere safe then switch the car off.

The next exit is where to leave if you're on the M4, under 10 miles from Wick.

A short hop across Wick is a smaller job than a run towards Cardiff, under 25 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Wick: what occurs when our engineers arrive

We come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside the local primary school, near St. James or on your own drive.

Those answers determine this work and the quote, so we ask what was put in, about how much, and whether it's run.

Nobody heads out before you've had the price over the phone.

Draining your tank comes next, followed by a thorough flush of your system.

Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and neither washes out unaided. That is why it matters more.

Once your filter has been cleaned — or replaced, if needed — clean diesel is added, and then your vehicle is tested.

The engine is started next and tested to be sure it runs correctly, all before our engineers leave.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour after we arrive, as long as the engine has not run — and the pumps we use are fine on a live forecourt and quiet at night outside a house.

Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents your insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

While we travel, take a look at your policy; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.

## Wick and The Vale of Glamorgan: AdBlue drains across the area

Wick is a coastal village, and our vans that cover it also work the places around it, Broughton and Monknash among them, across the CF postcode area.

A postcode starting CF71 7 gets the van to you fastest.

Your car doesn't need to shift.

Anywhere it stands — beside Monknash Monastery, on a layby heading to Wick Sports Pavilion, on a drive — that's where it gets drained.

Guessing won't help at the back of St Mary, on a border, or somewhere hard to pin down; phone and check.
