# How It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Wigan

Stop reading for a moment when your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your motor runs, it's generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Wigan.

The remainder of this page explains why it occurs and how to ensure it does not — handy if you're reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

No single liquid but two: that's what plenty of newer diesels around Wigan and Scholes run, with diesel feeding your motor.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, where a spray treats the gas.

Separate tanks, separate fillers.

Many of motors have a single flap for both, whereas others move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, your diesel side is topped up all the time.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less commonly, normally from a bottle, and usually by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

It is in that gap that the error lives.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank happen around Wigan?

It's rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Hewlett Street before work, or in the car park outside Barney's Bar on the way home.

Then the vehicle is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Third, the bottle goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in as readily, and after the pour begins, no part stops it.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Wigan or out in Wallgate.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Longshoot or a forecourt around Wigan.

- Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Open the flap and look for a label — plenty of motors show what belongs in which inlet just there.

- Can't see it next to your diesel filler? Then look below the bonnet or inside the boot — the handbook says where.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside Wigan Wallgate, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

Anywhere in Greater Manchester the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Turn off once parked — level ground, motor off, and never rushed beside College Avenue on the verge.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, and look once more — confirm your diesel filler remained closed throughout. Only then, start the vehicle.

Discover at the second or third stage that the bottle went into the wrong tank? That's where you stop.

Don't carry on to stage five.

## Wigan: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Short list, then. Top of that: the engine remains unstarted.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch the car on.

Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is drawn from.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it is the Tesco or the BP, ask the staff to help push the car away from the pump.

If you are on your own driveway around Wigan, leave the vehicle where it stands.

If your engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

Wigan lies under 3 miles from the Bryn Spur; on it, use the first exit.

About how far did it go? Hopping across Wigan is less work than a run of under 15 miles towards Salford, so say.

## When our engineers get there around Wigan, what happens?

Anywhere the car came to rest, be it by St Mary and St John Catholic Primary School, near Wigan Town Hall or on your own drive, our van comes to it.

Both the work and the price depend on three replies — which fluid, what amount, and whether it has run — so we ask.

You hear that price by phone, before anybody sets off.

The fuel system is then rinsed thoroughly, after that tank is drained.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more here than with petrol.

Testing comes at the end: before that, clean diesel is added, and the filter is cleaned or changed if necessary.

Your engine is fired up next and checked to be sure it runs properly, all before we go.

If your motor hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

It is worth looking at your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.

## AdBlue drains across Greater Manchester, Wigan included

Wigan is a riverside town, and the teams that cover it also work the places near it, Water Heyes and Bull Hey among them, across the WN postcode area.

Quote a postcode that starts WN1 1, and the van arrives quickest.

No need to shift the car.

Our engineers drain it where it is — a side street near Coming Home, a lay-by on the way to Wigan Cricket Club, a drive.

If you're near a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain like the back of Billy Boston, ring and ask instead of assuming.

## For Wigan people, the short version

Tip no AdBlue until you have read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank all the same, leave it off and ring 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel empties it where it sits, anywhere in Greater Manchester.
