# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Wigmore: How It Occurs and How to Prevent It

Leave the motor and ignition off and call 0333 366 0103 now — reading can wait if AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

A drain and a full flush, carried out just where the car stands in Wigmore, is usually what it takes when caught before the motor runs.

Reading in advance? In that case what follows explains how it comes about and what to prevent it ever happening.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Diesel feeds the motor — but many newer diesels seen about Wigmore and Stopsley hold a second fluid too.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler.

Under one flap, side by side: that's the layout on many vehicles. On others, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Diesel goes in at each forecourt visit, week in, week out.

Much less frequently, the AdBlue side is topped up — mostly from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

It's in that gap that the slip happens.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Wigmore: how it happens

It's seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from your car, and letting it run out leads to limp mode — so a hurried top-up, maybe before work off Wigmore Lane, or at Wigmore Arms on the way home that evening.

New-to-you vehicles come second, too. Rentals, new vehicles and company vehicles put their fillers differently, and the hand reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

Nothing stops the tip once it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Cockernhoe or the middle of Wigmore: it takes the same few seconds in both.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Whether a Wigmore forecourt or a drive over in Tea Green, spend a couple of seconds over these before anything goes in.

- Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Go by the cap, not its position.

- Plenty of cars give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- Lift the flap and look for a label — plenty of cars show which goes in which inlet just there.

- The handbook says which it is if your filler is not next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- The previous driver knows. Ask as you pick up a rental or fleet car — at Luton Airport Parkway's car park, perhaps — not once the warning appears.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

Wherever in Bedfordshire the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Twyford Drive.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Before starting the vehicle, shut the cap and check a second time that your diesel cap was never came off.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Step five stays out.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Wigmore?

Brief order, then. Top of it: the motor remains off.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch it on.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.

At a forecourt — Asda, Shell or another — the attendants will normally help roll your car clear, when you ask.

If you are on your own drive in Wigmore, leave it where it is.

If the engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

Come off the M1 — under 5 miles out of Wigmore — at the first exit.

Distance counts — a quick hop across Wigmore is a smaller job than driving under 10 miles towards St Albans — so tell us roughly how far it went.

## What occurs when we turn up around Wigmore

Outside Wigmore Primary, close to Wigmore Church or on your own driveway: wherever the vehicle has stopped, we come to it.

Our technicians ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether it has run, since the answers decide this work and the quote.

You get that quote by phone, before anybody sets off.

The fuel system is then rinsed thoroughly, once that tank is drained.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at some fuel-system metals, and neither clears out unaided. Hence it matters more.

Testing comes last: before that, clean diesel is added, and the filter is flushed or changed as needed.

We do not go until it has been started and is running smoothly.

Unstarted cars usually need a half-hour job from arrival. The equipment is safe on a busy filling station, and quiet enough for a driveway after dark.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

## Wigmore and Bedfordshire: AdBlue drains across the area

Throughout LU postcodes, our teams that cover Wigmore — a residential suburb — work the nearby locations too, Wandon End and Mangrove Green among them.

Fastest of all: give a LU2 9 postcode for the van.

Shifting the vehicle is not needed.

The drain happens right there, be it a driveway, a road by St Francis, or a lay-by towards Falstone Green.

Ring and ask instead of guessing if you're near a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of Marks & Spencer.
