# Why It Occurs and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Wilderspool

Leave your motor and ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103 now — the rest can wait when AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

A drain and a full flush, done just where the car sits around Wilderspool, is usually all it takes if caught before the motor runs.

Not happened yet? Below, the page covers the reasons it occurs and the ways to prevent it altogether.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Plenty of modern diesels around Cobbs, as well as Wilderspool, run on two liquids; the motor takes just your diesel.

Your exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the fumes to clean it, from its own tank.

Different tanks, different fillers.

Plenty of cars have a single flap for the two, whereas some put the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, the diesel side is topped up constantly.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less regularly, normally from a bottle, and usually by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

The mistake grows in that gap between them.

## Wilderspool: how AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

Haste comes from the warning. The car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a driveway off Wilderspool Causeway, or heading home in the car park outside Saracen's Head.

Unfamiliar vehicles come next, as well. Hire cars, new motors and company cars put their fillers differently, and the hand reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

Third, the spout goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in just as easily, and once the pour starts, nothing halts it.

Whether it takes place in Latchford or the middle of Wilderspool, it is the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in Howley or a forecourt in Wilderspool, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Read the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones normally are not.

- The size. On plenty of vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- A label inside the fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Look for it.

- The handbook says which it is if your filler isn't next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Warrington Bank Quay.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

Wherever around Cheshire the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Loushers Lane.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, yes, but it works.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave it on.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Before you start the vehicle, close the cap and check again that your diesel cap never came off.

Spot at stage two or three that it's already gone into your diesel side? Then stop just there.

Step five is off limits.

## Wilderspool: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

What follows is a short order of things, beginning with not starting your engine.

Leave your ignition off too, because on plenty of diesels switching it on by itself starts the fuel pump.

Filling up with diesel won't dilute it: instead, AdBlue drops to the bottom of the tank, just where fuel is taken from.

The attendants at Morrisons, Esso or another forecourt will normally help to push the vehicle away if asked.

Your own driveway in Wilderspool is the place it should stay.

Where your engine has been run by now, pull over somewhere safe then turn the vehicle off.

The next junction means where to leave when you're on the M56, under 3 miles from Wilderspool.

About how far did it go? Crossing Wilderspool is smaller work than a run of under 15 miles to Salford, so say.

## When we arrive around Wilderspool, what happens?

Outside St Thomas' CofE Primary School, near LRC or on your own driveway: wherever the car has stopped, we come to it.

The replies determine the work and our quote, and so our engineers ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it's run.

The quote is given over the phone, before any van leaves.

Emptying your tank comes next, followed by a thorough flush of the fuel system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more here than with petrol.

Filter flushed or, where it must be, swapped; clean diesel in; and then a check of your vehicle.

Your engine is started next and tested to be sure it runs correctly, all before our technicians go.

If your motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

It's worth checking your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.

Fastest of all: quote a WA4 6 postcode to our van.

Moving the vehicle isn't needed.

A driveway, a lay-by on the way to Causeway Park, a side street close to St. Werburgh's Community Hub: our technicians drain the car where it sits.

Assuming doesn't help behind St John's United Reformed Church, close to a border, or somewhere hard to describe; phone and check.

## The short version for Wilderspool motorists

Tip no AdBlue till you have read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank anyway, leave it off and phone 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel clears it where it stands, anywhere across Cheshire.
