# Willen: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then set this page down a moment, keep your ignition and engine off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a full flush, carried out right where your vehicle stands around Willen, is usually all it needs when caught before your engine runs.

Nothing happened yet? Below, the rest of the page covers the why it takes place and the ways to avoid it altogether.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Plenty of modern diesels on the roads round Willen and Caldecote carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust gas and cleans it.

Each tank has its own filler.

Other motors keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot more place both side by side under one flap.

Diesel goes in at every filling station visit, again and again.

Much less often, the AdBlue side gets topped up — normally from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

It is in the gap that the mistake happens.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Willen: how it occurs

It is hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from the car, and letting it run dry leads to limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Millngton Gate, or at The Ship Ashore on the way home that evening.

Then, the hand reaches for the cap it knew on the old motor — since a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not.

No part halts the tip once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

It's seconds, be it out in Tongwell or bang in the centre of Willen.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Be it a Willen forecourt or a drive out in Downhead Park, spend a couple of seconds on these before anything is poured in.

- Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally doesn't. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of cars, the AdBlue one.

- Look inside the fuel flap: plenty of motors have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows which it is if your filler isn't next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Milton Keynes Central.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

Wherever in Buckinghamshire the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

- Turn off once parked — level ground, engine off, and never in a rush by Christian Court at the roadside.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- The two under a single flap? So make sure the lid on the diesel side stays closed ahead of raising the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Before starting the car, close the cap and look a second time that your diesel cap never opened off.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side.

Skip step five entirely.

## Willen: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Short order, then. First: your engine remains unstarted.

Keep the ignition off too, because on many diesels switching it on by itself runs the pump.

Filling up with diesel will not weaken it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the base of your tank, just where the fuel is taken from.

The staff at Esso, Shell or any forecourt will usually lend a hand pushing your car clear if you ask.

## Our arrival in Willen, and what takes place next

Our van reaches the vehicle anywhere it has come to rest — your own driveway, beside Saint Mary Magdalene, or outside Willen Primary School.

Which liquid went in, the quantity, and whether it ran: our technicians ask since the answers set both work and price.

No one heads out before you've heard our quote over the phone.

Emptying that tank comes next, then a full flush of the fuel system.

Much more than with petrol, it counts here: the crystals form, some metals are attacked, and none of that washes away unaided, however long it sits.

Testing is at the end: before that, clean diesel is added, and the filter is cleaned or replaced if necessary.

Before we go, we start it and make sure that it's running properly.

Using pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the motor hasn't run take about half an hour once our technicians are there.

Nothing in advance; you settle up that day. At the end, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for your insurer.

Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies — so use the wait to look at yours.
