# Willington Square: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then keep the motor off — and your ignition as well.

Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue.

The trouble starts once it is pulled through your pump — it won't burn, and it won't blend with diesel.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Willington Square, is generally what AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it is caught before your engine has run.

Before anything, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Willington Square: the first few minutes

Things to do:

- So no one can switch the ignition on, pull the keys away.

- If you're anywhere near moving traffic, put the hazards on.

- So you can give us which fluid it was and roughly how much, keep the receipt or the empty bottle.

- Tell us a postcode starting NE28 9, or whatever street lies nearest, and our van reaches you directly — so ring from wherever you are.

Things not to do:

- Shifting the car just a short way is no reason to start the engine.

- Turning the key to ignition alone sets your pump going on plenty of diesels. Avoid it.

- AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra fuel won't weaken it.

- Do not drive it anywhere, not even a short stretch along Churchill Street.

- No emptying it yourself, either, at the roadside.

On a forecourt around Willington Square, whether it is the the nearest petrol station or another one, ask the attendants to help you push the car away from the pump.

If you're on your own drive, leave the car precisely where it is.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Not the motor but the exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go.

Stored in a dedicated tank, it's injected into the exhaust stream to treat the fumes.

A fuel pump isn't designed to take it, and AdBlue was never intended to travel through one.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves really differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in.

Denser than diesel, it drops and pools underneath it — the same place the pickup sucks from.

The first thing the system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a vehicle that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Rosehill last night, and has not been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of the tank, and nothing has sucked it in.

From there it causes two kinds of harm.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps labouring on the components it gets to for as long as it stays there.

By daybreak, a car sitting around Willington Square with AdBlue in its lines grows worse; where it's just in your tank, nothing changes.

Diesel lubricates the injection pump and each injector as it flows; water offers none of that, which is a separate form of harm.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it is frequently worse than petrol

Petrol put into a diesel on Esso's forecourt leaves the fuel watery — that's the main fault.

No damage is done while it sits put, blended into the diesel — only when the motor works on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is another problem: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all.

It doesn't burn, so it cannot simply be run through.

Nor can it be watered down, because it splits back out — and the following tankful will not rinse away crystals or corrosion. So the flush counts for more with AdBlue, and turning your key "to see", in the centre of Willington Square or out in Point Pleasant, costs more than almost any other mistake.

As with petrol, there is good news.

Emptying a tank is the easiest job on any fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue remains in there — anywhere in Tyne and Wear your car sits.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Willington Square?

It's not on purpose. Many cars keep the AdBlue inlet beside the diesel inlet, occasionally under a single flap, and muddling them up is easy in poor light.

Most of the time it happens with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the forecourt.

It tends to happen in a few familiar ways.

Hurrying, outside St Aidan's Catholic Primary School, Wallsend, after a warning light came on during the school run, a parent refills the vehicle.

Someone pours the container in outside their house, right off Bathgate Close, as the day ends.

Or your car is topped up in the car park at The Jolly Bowman, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.

Rented vehicles, new vehicles, fleet vehicles, or the second car in a home with one of each: the least known vehicles get it most.

Keep it switched off: that's the first step to an identical slip, anywhere in Willington Square or the rest of Tyne and Wear you happen to be.

## Started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Willington Square?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank.

The fuel filter and pipework have had it pulled along, and any running takes it on to the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Maybe coming back from Tall Trees Park, or midway across Willington Square, your engine may run rough, smoke, drop pace, flash the dash or cut out.

Once you safely can, pull over then turn everything off — without turning it on again to see.

Each start pulls more of that through.

If you were on the A167(M), under 5 miles from Willington Square, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere sensible rather than pressing on.

How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across Willington Square to the car park by Churchilll LTA tennis centre is a very different job from a run towards Newcastle upon Tyne, under 5 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with every mile.

Let us know about how far it had come.

We do all of the flushing where the vehicle has stopped, and once your engine has been run there is more of it.

If it's noticed quickly, lasting damage is very uncommon.

## Willington Square: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

The vehicle stays where it is, whether that's a street beside Our Lady & St Aidan’s, a driveway, a lay-by or a filling station around Willington Square, and our van travels to it.

Three answers decide the job, so before anything else our engineers ask what went in, about what quantity, plus whether the motor has run.

Next, emptying that tank on the spot takes out the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue in one go.

With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, the flush matters: the fuel system is cleaned right through since residue won't wash out by itself.

Fresh diesel goes in once the fuel filter is flushed — or replaced, when it needs to be — and then your vehicle is tested.

Roughly half an hour on site is typical for most jobs where the engine hasn't run.

The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

The final step is to prime your system on new diesel.

Then our engineers fire it up and you head off, whether from a parking bay by Brockley Whins or a driveway in Willington Square.

It's checked on new diesel to be sure it runs properly before our engineers go.

Our technicians do it all wherever your car has stopped, and it never has to go to a garage.

Your insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — each handed over afterwards.

Guessing won't help by a border or anywhere tricky to describe; phone and ask.

A van that comes to you suits Willington Square, a residential suburb: you have no need to take your vehicle to us, since our technicians drain it on the spot, on a driveway, a side street, a car park or a forecourt.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Willington Square: the cost of fixing it

Since each callouts vary, a single price wouldn't be fair.

Whether your engine has run, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the cost. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the position of the car, because an open driveway is easier for our van to get to safely than a tight space behind St Mary The Virgin.

With that in mind, each enquiry from Willington Square begins with the same trio — what went in, how much, if it ran — ahead of any quote.

Once those are known, a range turns into a single fixed number.

Priced on the call before the van sets out, the job is settled that day — card or phone, nothing in advance.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours while we're on the way.

## Beside the car in Willington Square, right now?

Right now, the most helpful thing to do with your vehicle is to not touch it.
