# Why It Happens and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Willow Field

Stop here for a moment when your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and call 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your motor runs, it's usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Willow Field.

Reading in advance? Then the rest covers why it comes about and what to prevent it happening at all.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Not one fluid but two: that's how many newer diesels near Willow Field and Pye Nest carry, with diesel for your motor.

AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it is sent to the exhaust, and there spraying treats the gas.

Separate tanks, different fillers.

Plenty of vehicles have a single flap for both, whereas some move the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

At the petrol pump, the diesel side is topped up constantly.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less frequently, normally from a bottle, and usually by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

It's in the gap that the slip happens.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Willow Field: how it happens

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out completely, your vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Willowfield Road before work, or in the car park at The Peacock on the way home.

Then, your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old car — since a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

A spout-topped bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, after started, keeps on.

Highroad Well or the middle of Willow Field: it takes the same few seconds in both.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A few seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a drive in Pellon or a forecourt around Willow Field.

- Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Trust the cap, not its position.

- On plenty of motors, size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- Look inside the fuel flap: many cars carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where the filler is if it is not by your diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- Whoever had it before knows. Check when you pick up a rental or fleet car — at Sowerby Bridge's car park, say — rather than when the light appears.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around West Yorkshire that is.

- Switch off once parked — level ground, motor off, and never rushed beside Brow Foot Gate Lane at the roadside.

- Daft as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew the cap works — once you have found your filler and read the cap.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where both sit under a flap, make sure it's shut before lifting the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Before starting the car, shut the cap and look a second time that the diesel cap never came off.

Spot at stage two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? Then stop right there.

Never go on to stage five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in Willow Field?

Don't start your motor: that is how the short order of things begins.

On plenty of diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch it on.

Thinning it with extra diesel won't work, since AdBlue sinks to the bottom instead of mixing — and that is where your fuel is pulled from.

The staff at the nearest petrol station, Asda or another forecourt will normally lend a hand pushing your car clear if asked.

If you are on your own drive around Willow Field, leave the car where it sits.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

Leave the M62 — under 5 miles out of Willow Field — at the first exit.

A short hop across Willow Field is a smaller job than a run towards Bradford, under 10 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

## What occurs when our engineers arrive around Willow Field

Anywhere the car came to rest, be it by Warley Road Primary Academy, beside St John the Evangelist or on your own drive, our van travels to it.

Those replies settle the work and the quote, and so we ask what went in, about how much, and if it has run.

No one sets off before you've heard the price by phone.

Next: draining, then a thorough flush of the whole system.

Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and none of it washes out unaided. That is why it counts more.

Filter cleaned or, if needed, replaced; fresh diesel in; and then a test of the vehicle.

Before we leave, our technicians start the engine and confirm that it's running correctly.

Using pumps fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your engine has not run take about half an hour once we arrive.

The insurer usually wants the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both once this job is done. Payment is on the day, with no deposit.

It's worth checking your policy as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.
