# How It Occurs and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Wilnecote

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and your ignition off and call 0333 366 0103.

Around Wilnecote, catching it before your motor turns usually leaves a drain and a full flush on the spot.

Here before the event? Then the rest explains how it comes about and how to stop it happening at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Many modern diesels on the roads around Wilnecote and Belgrave carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust gas and cleans it.

Each tank has one filler of its own.

Some cars keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others have both side by side behind one flap.

Topping up the diesel side at the pump happens constantly.

The AdBlue side is filled far less often, normally from a bottle, and normally by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

Mistakes happen in the gap between them.

## Wilnecote: how AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place

Carelessness rarely explains it. Instead is three things lining up at once.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from the car, and running dry means limp mode — so a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Stonydelph Lane, perhaps outside Queens Head on the way home after work.

Next, your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old motor — since a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car places the fillers where your last one didn't.

A spouted bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, after started, keeps on.

Whether it happens in Stonydelph or the middle of Wilnecote, it is the same few seconds.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Look at these before pouring, on a forecourt around Wilnecote or a driveway out in Glascote Heath. Seconds, no more.

- Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Trust the cap, not where it sits.

- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on many vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside the fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on many cars. Look for it.

- The handbook says where it lives when your filler is not next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside the nearest station, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

For the day the light appears — wherever you are around Staffordshire — a simple routine to follow.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Sandstone Court.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, yes, yet it does the trick.

- Both behind a single flap? So make sure the lid on the diesel side is still shut before lifting the bottle.

- Finish once the tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; until then, pour gently using the built-in spout.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

Discover during the second or third step that AdBlue went in the wrong tank? That's where you stop.

Step five stays off limits.

## Wilnecote: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

What follows is a short order of things, beginning with not starting the engine.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch the vehicle on.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is drawn from — so do not top up with diesel to dilute it.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it is the Morrisons or the Texaco, ask the attendants to help push the car clear of the pump.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive around Wilnecote.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

The next junction is the place to come off if you are on the M42, under a mile from Wilnecote.

Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Wilnecote is smaller a job than a trip of under 10 miles towards Lichfield, and so say.

## Wilnecote: what occurs when we turn up

By Wilnecote Junior Academy, close to Holy Trinity Church or on your own drive: wherever your car has stopped, we come to it.

What fluid went in, the quantity, and whether it ran: we ask since the replies set both work and quote.

During the phone call itself, you are told the quote — before dispatch.

Emptying that tank comes next, followed by a full flush of the fuel system.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

We do not leave until it has been started and is running smoothly.

If the motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Nothing upfront; you settle up on the day. At the end, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for your insurer.

While we travel, take a look at your insurance documents; many include cover for misfuelling.
