# How It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Windmill Hill

Stop reading for a moment if your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a thorough flush, carried out right where your vehicle sits around Windmill Hill, is usually what it takes when found before your motor runs.

Here before the event? Then the rest covers how it comes about and what to stop it ever happening.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Diesel goes to the engine — but plenty of newer diesels seen around Windmill Hill and The Prinnels carry a second liquid too.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There's a filler on each tank.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, the diesel side is topped up constantly.

Much less regularly, the AdBlue side is filled — normally from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

The slip lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Windmill Hill: how it occurs

Carelessness seldom explains it. What does is three things lining up at once.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Lineacre Close before work, or in the car park at The Windmill on the way home.

New-to-you vehicles are second, as well. Hire cars, new vehicles and company motors place their fillers in new places, and the hand goes for the cap it used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, once begun, keeps on.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Windmill Hill or out in Freshbrook.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Toothill or a forecourt around Windmill Hill, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually isn't. Read it instead of going by where it sits.

- Check the size: the smaller neck is, on many vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook says which it is if the filler is not next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Swindon.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

When the light comes on, anywhere around Wiltshire, use this routine.

- Turn off after you park — level ground, motor stopped, and never in a rush beside Audley Close at the roadside.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, yes, yet it does the trick.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side.

Step five is out.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Windmill Hill?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the motor.

Do not switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Thinning it with extra diesel fails, since AdBlue settles to the base instead of mixing — and that is where your fuel is sucked from.

The staff at BP, Asda or another forecourt will normally lend a hand to push the car away when asked.

Your own drive in Windmill Hill is the place it should stay.

Already run? Stop once it is safe, then turn off.

The next exit is the place to leave when you are on the M4, under a mile from Windmill Hill.

Distance matters — a quick hop across Windmill Hill is a smaller job than heading under 50 miles to Bath — so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Our arrival in Windmill Hill, and what happens next

Our technicians come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Millbrook Primary School, near Nexus or on your own driveway.

Both the work and the quote depend on three replies — what liquid, which amount, and if it's run — so we ask.

On the call itself, you hear our price — before anything else.

After that: a drain, then a thorough flush of the entire system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that matters more here than with petrol.

Filter cleaned or, if needed, replaced; fresh diesel in; then a test of your car.

We don't leave until it has been started and is running correctly.

With pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where your engine has not run need roughly half an hour once our engineers arrive.

The insurer usually wants the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours once the job is done. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
