# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Winlaton Mill: How It Happens and How to Avoid It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and your ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103.

Around Winlaton Mill, finding it before your engine runs normally means draining and a full flush on the spot.

If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Diesel goes to the engine — yet plenty of newer diesels seen round Winlaton Mill and Swalwell carry another liquid as well.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There is a filler for every tank.

Some cars put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others place both together under one flap.

Topping up your diesel side at the petrol pump goes on constantly.

Far less commonly, the AdBlue side is topped up — mostly from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

That gap is where the mistake lives.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place in Winlaton Mill

It's rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Noel Avenue before work, or in the car park at The Fellsider on the way home.

Then your car is new. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Nothing stops the pour after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Winlaton Mill or out in Axwell Park.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Blaydon Burn or a forecourt around Winlaton Mill.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally is not. Read it rather than going by position.

- On many vehicles, the size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Lift the filler flap and check for a label — many motors show what goes in which filler just there.

- The handbook says which it is if the filler isn't next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at Blaydon, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

The day the light comes on, anywhere in Tyne and Wear, use this routine.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Noel Terrace.

- Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — after you've found the filler and read it.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the vehicle on.

- Stop once that tank fills or the bottle is empty; before that, tip gently through the built-in spout.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Step five stays out.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Winlaton Mill already?

Do not start the motor: that's how the short order of things starts.

Don't switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Thinning it with more diesel fails, since AdBlue sinks to the bottom instead of mixing — and that is where the fuel is pulled from.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it's the Esso or the another forecourt nearby, ask the attendants to help push your car away from the pump.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway in Winlaton Mill.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if the motor has already run.

On the Central Motorway East, under 5 miles from Winlaton Mill, that means the next exit.

A short hop across Winlaton Mill is a smaller job than a run towards Newcastle upon Tyne, under 5 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## When our engineers get there around Winlaton Mill, what takes place?

Our van reaches your car wherever it has come to rest — your own drive, beside Winlaton Mill Village Hall, or by Parkhead Community Primary School.

Those replies determine the work and our quote, and so our engineers ask what went in, about how much, and if it's run.

You hear that price by phone, before anybody sets off.

The fuel system is then cleaned thoroughly, after your tank is cleared.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and none of it washes out by itself. That is why it matters more.

Testing comes last: before that, clean diesel is added, and the filter is cleaned or replaced as needed.

Your engine is started next and checked to confirm it runs correctly, all before our engineers go.

Unrun vehicles mostly mean a half-hour visit from the moment we arrive. The equipment is safe on a live filling station, and hushed enough for a driveway late at night.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

It's worth looking at your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.
