# How It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Wisewood

Stop here for a moment when your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

In Wisewood, finding it before the engine runs normally leaves a drain and a full flush on the spot.

The remainder of this page explains why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't — useful if you are reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Plenty of newer diesels on the roads round Wisewood and Hallowmoor carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust stream to clean it.

Separate tanks, different fillers.

Some vehicles keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot more have both side by side behind one flap.

At the pump, your diesel side is topped up constantly.

Rarely filled, AdBlue normally comes out of a bottle, poured by someone who must stop and think what filler to use.

The slip lives in that gap.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank happens around Wisewood

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, your vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Vale Grove before work, or in the car park outside The Wisewood Inn on the way home.

Then your car is strange. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and the hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Lastly, the spout goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in as readily, and after the tip begins, nothing halts it.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Wisewood or out in Normandale.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Be it a Wisewood forecourt or a driveway out in Loxley Bottom, spend a couple of seconds on these before any goes in.

- Check the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are regularly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones normally are not.

- The size. On many vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Lift the filler flap and check for a label — many motors show what belongs in which filler just there.

- The handbook shows which it is if the filler isn't next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Whoever had it before knows. Ask when you collect a hire car or company car — from Sheffield's car park, perhaps — rather than when the warning comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

For the day the light appears — wherever you are across South Yorkshire — a routine to follow.

- Not in a rush on the side of Keswick Close, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park then switch off properly.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew it. It seems daft. It works.

- The diesel cap remains on. When the two sit under a flap, make sure it's shut before the bottle comes up.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Find during the second or third stage that AdBlue went in the diesel tank? That's where you stop.

Never go on to stage five.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Wisewood?

Don't start your motor: that's how the short order of things begins.

Leave the ignition off as well, since on plenty of diesels it by itself runs the pump.

Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is sucked from.

Ask the attendants to help push your car clear of the petrol pump if you are on a forecourt — the JET, the BP or somewhere else.

Your own driveway in Wisewood is the place it should stay.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your motor has already run.

Wisewood sits under 5 miles from the M1; there, use the first junction.

A short hop across Wisewood is a smaller job than a run towards Sheffield, under 3 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## When we get there around Wisewood, what occurs?

Anywhere the vehicle came to rest, be it outside Loxley Primary School, beside Loxley Methodist Church or on your own drive, the van travels to it.

The replies decide the work and our price, and so we ask what went in, about how much, and whether it's run.

That price is given on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

The fuel system is then purged thoroughly, once that tank is cleared.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

Testing is at the end: before that, fresh diesel is added, and your filter is flushed or changed if necessary.

Before we leave, we fire it up and make sure that it's running correctly.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour after our technicians arrive, as long as the motor has not run — and the pumps our technicians use are fine on a busy forecourt yet quiet after dark beside a house.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork your insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Misfuelling cover is included in many insurance policies — so make use of the wait to look at yours.
